I recently downloaded HamSphere and find that it performs much as advertised, however, it is NOT ham radio! A number of CB types clutter up the bands and the audio is a little scratchy. It does offer a convenient way to quickly check for activity on virtually every band. I think it's $29.00 per year but I would not recommend it. Your thoughts?

Exactly.

As the OP said, it's NOT ham radio.

As stated on their web site:
HamSphere is a virtual Ham Radio Transceiver.

In other words ... communications via the Internet that simulates amateur radio.

No it doesn't.

It shows you activity on HamSphere's "virtual" (simulated) bands ... on the Internet.

It is of great value if you are exploring if  ham radio is something you want to do.  It also can give you a feel for what HF work might be like when you get you shack online.  It can also be useful for those wishing to play around some before they take their exams to get a license.

I cannot see much use for it after having a shack and license.
