Author Topic: Added 17M to Hustler 5BTV - Had to Retune  (Read 4514 times)

I've read where others have added 17M to the Hustler and it did not affect tuning of the other bands.  One reported that retuning was necessary for 15M.

I added a 14 ga insulated wire using 10 inch standoffs made from 1/2 inch PVC.  SWR on 17M is 1.2:1 across the band.

My tuning results are markedly different.  10M thru 40M had to be retuned by moving traps.  Resonant frequency increased as follows:

10M +554 KHz
15M +220 KHz
20M +90  KHz
40M changed slightly.

Was able to retune all bands, most below 1.5:1.  40M was highest at 1.8:1 to 2.1:1

Thought this might be interesting to someone thinking about adding 17M.

Thanks for that info as I'm in process with installing one of those verticals now. I bought the Hustler 17mtr kit with the antenna so I'll be doing it all at the initial install. Hoping for just one session of tuning... Wink

Let me know how the add on kit turns out.  Since you won't have a 13 foot wire running down beside your antenna you may not see the changes I saw.

If you install the 17M kit before tuning the antenna, one tuning should do the trick.

I have 32 radials which lowers the resonance of the factory settings, making it necessary to move the traps for tuning.

DX Engineering instructions are easy to follow.

I also have a BTV the 6 version, what brings in the 40m band since there is not a 40 trap?

Thanks

I'm no expert, but I think that since there is no 40M trap the entire length of the antenna is available to 40M.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
