Curious as to others opinions. I have one each of the Kenwood TMV-71A and the Yeasu FT 8800R in the truck. I am planning to incorporate a Tiny Trak 4 into the scheme and wondering which would be the best of the two to attach this to...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

My personal preference is slated towards Kenwood, however, one major issue to keep in mind is whether or not either model is capable of operating data and voice at the same time. Most if not all of the older dual band mobile’s could be used for APRS but they couldn’t do both at the same time. You had to be careful which “side” the PTT function was on to avoid packets being broadcast on your local 2m or 70cm repeater. Sometime later manufacturers began incorporating the feature that allowed your dual band mobile rig to operate data and voice simultaneously. I don’t know if either of these models have this feature but I would make certain whatever you buy does, as it will get very old real fast having to constantly remember which side your PTT indicator is on.
I’m assuming the Kenwood model can do this, as the older TM-V7 had a menu setting enabling this. Not sure about the Yaesu though . . .

I am pretty sure the 8800 can't. I have a 8900, and I was surprised that it can't do both at the same time. I have been tripped up a few times when the wrong side of the radio was selected and my PARS packets went out the repeater.

Hi Randy,
I have found that the TMV71 has in it's menu functions the ability to 'specify' which 'band' (A or B) for packet related traffic. Yes, I can talk on the B channel, either in the same band (2m / 70cm) as the APRS or the other band without conflict. Obviously if you are tx'g APRS on 2m it mutes data side of the radio and then resumes once the transmission is complete.
I have not played with the 8800 as of yet...
Thank you for the feedback.
