I have a USB to serial adapter I'm using on my laptop attempting to program my D700, but no matter what setting I use I can't get it to work with the Kenwood software. Is there someone out there who has done this?

Does the computer see the radio at all? What about the usb adapter? What port is it configured for? Mine connects to serial port 4 most of the time. Your software must also be set to connect to the port that the adapter is using. Go to the control panel on the computer, then computer management, then device manager. See if your USB adapter is listed, it will show up under ports (Com and LPT), look at its properties to see what port it is using. If you don't see an entry, the adapter didn't install properly. Plug and Play doesn't always work, so install the drivers for the adapter you are using.

I tried setting it to both COM 3 and 4 amking sure there weren't any conflicts and still there's a comunication error. I left the settings at the default of 8,1,none. I may try to see if there's a way to borrow a real serial port since this one isn't working.

I own a Kenwood TM-D700, TS-2000X, and TH-F6A. The Kenwood programming software for the TS-2000X and TH-F6A will work with a USB adapter. The programming software for the TM-D700 WILL NOT WORK with a USB to Serial adapter. I have spent hours with a breakout box working on this, and have had no luck making it work using the same USB adapter (KEYSPAN HS-19) that works fine with the other 2 radios. All I get is a communication timeout message from the D700 programming software. For whatever reason, a USB to serial adapter will not work with the D700 software.
However, if you're using a laptop with a PCMCIA slot, there is a workaround. I bought a PCMCIA RS-232 adapter card. It plugs into the PCMCIA slot, and has a DB-9 dongle that attatches to it. This works fine for programming the D700. I don't remember where I bought it, but I found it by doing a goolge search- I think I paid under $25 for it.
If you are using a desktop computer, you'll need to buy a PCI serial card. These polug into an empty PCI slot on the motherboard, and give you 2 or 4 DB-9 serial ports. These work fine in programming the D700 also.
73 and good luck,

This is all helpful information. Add to that the cable I've been using may not be a straight through. I think I have one now that tests out OK(2-2, 3-3) and willl try that on the USB adapter. If that fails then I'll take one of my smaller PC's with a real serail port on it out to the Jeep and program it using the right cable.
Thanks to all for your help and I'll post myfindings when I get finished.

I use a Dynex USB to serial and I have no problem at all using the Kenwood MCP program. You must install the USB drivers that come with the device or it will not run.

Done. It was the USB converter I was using AND a bad serial cable. These have been dealt with and I have successfully reprogrammed the D700A several times now.
Another item some folks miss is the SERVICE MODE where the deviation is set for both bands. Short of using a scope I've had to set these the old fashioned way.
