Right now I just wanted to Rx but from what I understand my Radio is a Yaesu VX-170 I would still need a TNC between it and my computer?

Also if I forget the radio Idea for just Rx can I hook a GPS and just report my location by connecting to the internet?

There are a few people who use UIview32 on a laptop connected to a cellular modem, but what's the fun in that? There are plenty of options for interfacing a PC, GPS, and radio, check the forum archives for lots of solutions.

UI-View 32 will let you do APRS via sound card with AGWPE.

See http://www.kc2rlm.info/soundcardpacket/ and http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiv32_uiview32.php?lang=english and http://www.mcminnarc.com/aprs/aprs.html
