looking for a new mode and being interested in APRS i found the VX-8R. I understand this radio does APRS, I was looking at the manual for packet info and it says you need a TNC still. I guess i am confused in the difference in packet and APRS (Automatic PACKET reporting system). if someone can set me straight i would appreciate it.

As a prospective owner of the VX-8R, I wanted to check the reviews. Thanks for the informative reviews! I was concerned when a review stated that you could not send manually send an APRS beacon from the front key panel but one must rather be on an internal menu...

Page 85 of the online manual states you can send a beacon "just press the "[atom?] tx po" key on the lower left of the keypad. Is that correct?

My Kenwood D7A/E allows keypad manual beaconing from the keypad.

Thanks for any input.

Yes, just press the ATOM key and it will send a APRS packet. HOWEVER, you have to be on a APRS screen, because the key is a mulit purpose key.

Correct - when running APRS, hit the menu key to view your GPS stats; hit the menu key again to go to the list of received stations. Then hit the atom key to beacon.

You can leave it on the received stations view then just tap the atom key to beacon as needed. Works great.

This radio was the simplest to set up on APRS I've ever seen - the defaults are all just right.

Could somebody let me know what the proper settings are for the DIGI PATH? I have tried a number of different options with varying results.

If I keep the defaults (WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1) my transmission is repeated back to me but nobody else sees it. If I change it to WIDE3-3, the report is seen on openAPRS but not on my HT.

What is the correct setting? I am in a very rural setting with few users.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

"Your station is transmitting packets with a configured path of over 3 digipeaters. This causes serious congestion in the APRS network and errors when plotting the station's route on a map. Please consider using a path of WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 or WIDE2-2, or even WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 if you are moving very far away from an iGATE. If WIDE1-1 is used in the path, it should be the first component of the path, so that a fill-in digipeater would be the first one to retransmit the packet".

Since you are being digi'd reliably by "PNKMYN" and Igated, high settings are not required. Have fun!

Thanks Lindy!

Could you (or anybody) explain what the WIDEx-y settings refer too. I understand that WIDE1-1 is for local digipeating but what is the difference between for example WIDE2-1 and WIDE2-2?

Thanks again,
Scott

Here is a good site. Explains things much better than I could:
