Byonics is selling a 10 watt APRS beacon based on their Tiny Trak device and a 2 meter radio. They are around $250 each, so before I drop that money, I wanted to know if anyone had used one of these and what they thought of it.

Don't know about that particular product - but everything else I've ever used from Byonics has been exactly what I wanted.

I have a friend that uses one...for what it is he loves it except for the 10 watts. In areas sparse with digipeaters, 10 watts is limiting. I like having two way capability and use an Alinco, 35 watt dual bander ($95) on Ebay, AEA 232MBX modem ($52) and old Gateway laptop with Wi-Fi ($106). Total $253.

Mobile digi, Igate and messaging: priceless!

Naturally, I am biased, and think the Micro-Trak AIO is the coolest thing since sliced bread, but I may be overly enthusiastic! You can get pretty good feedback on how any Micro-Trak product performs by asking about it ( or just surfing) The Micro-Trak users group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MicroTrak/ My field experience with the AIO leads me to believe that the 10 Watt output level is much less of a performance limit than the rubber duck antenna, and I suggest external transmit antennae anytime you can get away with it!

This unit is absolutely perfect and well-built. I read a couple of the ??? about the 10 watt output. 10 watts is more than enough. This is not meant to be a mobile (in-car) device. Although, it can utilize an external antenna on a car. It is really made for hikers, bikers, walkers and other ACTIVE people. I use it for exactly that and it is wonderful.

The gentleman earlier in these postings with the Alinco, old notebook computer, TNC and the like is not comparing apples to apples. His has an extremely cumbersome setup and is not at all flexible and convenient like the Micro-Trak AIO. I wouldn't think hauling around all that equipment would be much fun.

If you want to use it in a car, buy the TinyTrak 3+ or 4. If you are active and want a unit to use "on the go," buy the Micro-Trak AIO. It has a switch which allows you to choose from two different profiles. It would allow you for example to have position 1 used while you are jogging and even showing a symbol of a jogger. Position 2 could be used while traveling in a rental car. It could show the car symbol.

Byonics is an incredible company and you absolutely cannot go wrong!

I have several Byonics products and agree that Byon is a really great guy and his products are also great. The point I was making is that if you just want a tracker and have a lot of close by digipeaters, a 10 watt unit is fine. If however you need two way capability and a little more power, or want to do emergency digipeating and wifi Igating, I described the way to do it.

I expect to have our new transmitter out in mid-may, the Micro-Trak BFT, a single channel, max 45 Watt transmitter on a 4.7 X 2.4 inch board. Expected price will be less than 200.00.

I have the micro trak AIO. I found it to work well, but seems for some reason to work better when I have the unit horizontally than vertically. feel free to check out how often it updates by following as I have it on almost all the time. I have it connected to a 12v 7 amp hr. gel cell on my motorcycle.

I have 2 of the MT-AIO units and find that the 10 watts is more than enough. In fact since I run them on Battery power from time to time I have both set to 2 watts output and that is still more than enough power. Hauling around a TNC and a laptop is not very practical while hiking or riding the ATV. Great well built product with some of the best customer support around.
