APRS and Windows Vista Reply
by N3PRZ on February 23, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
So is there anything out there that is for APRS that works for Vista. WinAPRS doesn't seem to be any good on Vista, and was barely a program on older PC OSs. I about to give up and just go buy the "out of the box" system that doesn't even use ham radio.

UI-View32 works fine for my Vista laptop.

Where would I find that software? Any cost? How easy is it to use, a simple USB GPS plugged in and the software shows stations?

UI-View 32 is "cancerware" i.e. when you register, you promise to make a donation to cancer research. The author passed away from cancer.

How easy is it to use,
Pretty easy, lots of help available at setup screens when you first open them, then with your F1 key there after.

a simple USB GPS plugged in
If the GPS when plugged in shows up as a comport.

and the software shows stations?
Yep. That and much more...

OK...thanks for the help....any others options for Vista and APRS....or is that it. Not sure if I want to take a chance with unsupported software if I don't have to.

While the author of UI-View32 has passed, and there will not be any upgrades to the core, there is lots of support available at the UI-View32 Yahoo group, and many add-ons have been created to enhance it.

One thing to remember with Vista, for many older programs, you will probably have to install and run them in some kind of administrator or backwards compatibility mode.

I dread seeing what kind of garbage Win 7 crops up...

What I don't get is this:
While people get rid of the rigs they don't like, they somehow feel stuck with running Vista.
I'm sure we would have less vista problems if pople stopped buying machines with Vista, or install XP on it.

UI-View32 is pretty much the gold standard in Windows APRS software, whatever flavor of Windows you run. The help files no longer function in Vista though, unless you download WinHlp32.exe from Microsoft (not a big deal). Otherwise, it still works 100% as it does in XP or 2K.

What I am wondering though is if anyone is developing or has developed a "replacement" so to speak. UI-View is great and still very useful, however it's closed source and that will likely never change, so it will NEVER be updated. I'd love to see someone develop a new program, more up to date and more compliant with newer practices and hardware, etc. but the work involved would be huge I'm sure.

It would be fantastic if someone could use the Google Earth API and give us Google Earth type map views, along with TNC, APRS-IS and GPS capability... Does anyone know of any current projects of that sort?

This: https://aprskml.dev.java.net/ looks rather promising but I can't seem to get it to work.

http://www.openaprs.net/

This is probably the best implementation of that I've seen. Only downfall is that it's a net based project; it's not an "on the air" type system.

I don't know how anyone can even use OpenAPRS... I find it to be much too slow.

http://www.aprs.fi is MUCH better, though it too has had the occasional slow down, but it's still quite usable 98% of the time.

If only one of those teams would work on a stand alone app...
