IC-208H and trying to get started. Reply
by WD0HBU on February 27, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I have a IC-208H, a GPS from a 2009 Steets and Trips program. I know I need a TNC? And cable. But after this point I am lost. I have no idea how to set it up and while I'm using the radio for APRS can I still use the radio for QSO's?

Since the IC-208H can only operate and display one frequency at a time, you will NOT be able to operate any dual tasks or modes at the same time. Even normal dual band radios, able to run duplex or with both 2M and 440 at the same time, are difficult because when the microphone is keyed it disrupts the non-transmitting side of the radio. However, some dual band units have separate speaker outputs for each band, which at least allows semi-continual monitoring of APRS on 144.39 while the other half of the radio can be used for voice etc. This of course does NOT apply to the 208H. To operate APRS with the 208H you'd have to manually switch it to 144.39 simplex (this can be in a memory or VFO setting, doesn't matter) and connect the APRS / TNC interface and let it run. When you wish to use it for voice, you must disconnect the interface and reconnect the microphone.
Email me if you want to go to the trouble with all this. I recommend buying a cheaper used 2 meter radio, no tone required, to use as a separate packet/
APRS transceiver. This of course means 2 separate antennas on your vehicle but that just helps make you look like a real ham.....

I agree with Jim. I use an old Alinco HT from EBay ($40) and a second two meter antenna on the car. The cheapest and a very easy way to go with a TNC :

Everything is mounted under the rear seat and except for the GPS and 2 meter antenna no one knows its there.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The information you provided was what I figured I would need to do, you confirmed it for me. I think where I got off track is the fact that the 208H has a data plug and I wasn't sure if that was where I needed to connect. I have a Alinco DR-150T that will work just fine for this project. Again thank you for your time. Also thank you Lindy, WW5AA, for the extra info. now I need to sit down a figure out what TNC I want to use and what cables and connections I need. Again tnx.
