I am trying to send an APRS message to WLNK-1 but cannot enter the hyphen. I can enter WLNK -1 with the extra space and I assume it is an SSID but it hasn't worked yet.
I am able to enter the lower case letters and punctuation marks in the message part.
Help greatly appreciated.

What you did is correct
i.e. enter WLNK then press <mode> twice to make a space and use the <dial> to select -1
I looked at www.aprs.fi and found your messages.
You did a few tests to WLNK1, but the ones correctly addressed to WLNK-1 got a reply back.
I sent myself an email using the VX8R by sending 3 separate APRS messages to WLNK-1 -

I'm glad to see it got into the system. In the body of my message, I put either the character L or I and expected a response message giving me a list of calls or help information. I never received one on my VX-8R. Any ideas why not?

Checking http://aprs.fi/?c=message&call=N4GMG-7
it shows that you got responses to the L and I commands
I think the problem could be that all of your Winlink messages went through the W4UNC digipeater. They got digipeated to the N8VNR iGate, the replies were transmitted by the iGate but were not digipeated back to you.
At my current location I have no iGate in range of my VX8R, but there is one in range of my TM-D700 in the car. I set the mobile radio to digipeat. The VX8R messages were digipeated and hit the iGate. I saw the replies being received on the mobile, but they were not digipeated to the VX8R.
I'll try again tomorrow direct from the VX8R when I am near the iGate. I expect that will work OK.
This is all new to me, so this stuff might be obvious to experienced APRS users :-)

I also saw that there were replies to the L and I at aprs.fi. I'll wait to see what happens with your VX8R.
Thanks for your help.

Sent an I to WLNK-1 directly to the iGate.
Got a reply on the VX-8R - it took a few minutes to come back though. The reply to the iGate was fairly quick but the message was not received by RF for several minutes.
In my previous tests I was expecting the reply to be within seconds and had most likely moved the VX-8R so it was not receiving the iGate by the time the message was generated.
My tests via the digipeater were passed to Winlink but the reply was not broadcast. Not sure if that is normal of just a feature of the digi that I used.
I would get yourself near enough to an iGate to receive a solid signal and try again, but hang around for 15 minutes.
Interesting stuff, am looking forward to playing some more ;-)
