Single chip transmitters Reply
by KC0LOV on July 21, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
So I'm new to APRS and a novice HAM. I would love to put together a small light weight tracker, and have been looking into the tiny track with a single chip GPS receiver. My problem has been finding a good "single chip" transmitter for a good price. I need to keep things small as I will be flying this unit as a small payload. The only module I have seen so far was from radiometrix and was not for the correct frequency and was a bit pricey. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. The micro track is a great product for the price. However I really want to make a fully integrated unit of my own construction. If that doesn't happen I may just use a single chip GPS with the micro track.

Any other ideas?

search ebay for vhs-products. he supplies byonics with transmitters. I wanted to suggest ramsey electronics' mr6 rocket transmitter, which I've used for foxhunting but not aprs, but it looks like it's discontinued. you can try calling to see if they have any leftovers. ramseyelectronics.com

radiometrix says their HX1 does 120 - 180 MHz on special order. I assume you want to do 144.39.

let us know what you find out. maybe we can do a group buy with you if they need a quantity order.

I dropped the production of the MT-300 using the HX1 module since to keep the costs down to reasonable levels, I had to order the units in very high quantities. I also found that a 300 mW transmitter is not suitable for anything other than airborne applications. If you are really determined to build a tracker, I can sell you an HX-1 module ( on the custom 144.390 frequency) for $50.00. Is your plan to build a fully integrated unit with the GPS receiver on the same board, or are you going to integrate pre-manufactured parts?

Take a look at the MX146 2M transmitter module that we carry. Frequency agile from 144-148 MHz, select frequency from a set table or program via SPI or I2C interfaces. Available in 5V and 8V versions:

Thanks for the replies folks. I will likely go with the mx146 solution. The final product will have a single chip GPS receiver, tiny track SMC type, mx146,and amp. This will all be mounted to a single carrier board and packaged with a battery to fit into a 2 inch diameter tube. Thanks again for all the info.
