AFSK in APRS Reply
by KD4YKW on September 17, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Hello,

im new to APRS...

however i am almost done designing a tracker with FSK.

but i am a little confused as to if i need AFSK or not?

is AFSK only done on 1200 baud, and its just normal FSK at 9600 baud ??

what baud / FSK or AFSK is everyone using?

tnx

APRS uses packet radio. On VHF/UHF packet radio is AFSK modulating FM (at 1200 baud for APRS). Even 9600 baud is AFSK modulating FM.

FSK is only useful on HF. The baud rate of Packet radio on FM is 300 baud.

thanks for the reply!

from your post and other things around the net, i gather that its:

1) 1200 baud AFSK on 144.xx 2 meter band

2) 9600 baud FSK on ~440 mhz band

not worried about 300 on HF....

so i will modify the circuit to do AFSK and FSK both at 1200 and 9600 baud... (and higher).
