Yaesu VX-8r VX-8 Computer control UIview Winaprs Reply

Hi,
Previously owning a Kenwood D7, D700 and now a 710. I was wondering if anyone has been able to access the TNC in the vx-8r to use for software such as UIview or Winaprs. All of the rigs and TNC's that are APRS have this capability. There should be no reason why the manufacturer should have limited this ability.
Also all the Yeasu rigs I own are computer controllable. I don't understand why they most advanced HT has been limited on this function
I notice that Yaesu has a updated version the VX-8DR. The VX-8r IS supposed to be upgradable to this version but you have to send it into the factory. This adds additional features like smart beaconing.
My Kenwood D-710 was upgraded by a simple downloadable file.

You might look in your manual at the TNC commands list and compare them to some of the TNC command files in UI-View32.

I picked up a VX-8DR last week and it is a nice HT. I have a few thoughts on why Yaesu may require the radio to go back to a service center for upgrading;

1. It may be that while the core firmware could be upgraded through the top connector some of the internal chipsets may not be accessible through this means or they are rewriting a few FPGA's (field programmable gate arrays).

I have run across this before with some commercial gear where I could upgrade firmware through a telnet session or a patch-cable but to get to some of the more esoteric internals required that the radio be dissected and a programming "box" was temporarily attached to a set of pins on the circuit board. It is not uncommon for some of the functionality of modern radios resides inside of the bootloaderr that is at a lower level than the firmware or where a flash of an FPGA was required to add major functions.

2. Another possibility is that for Yaesu to add this level of functionality they may have to expose more of their firmware in a "naked" fashion. What I mean by that is firmware is a closely guarded and proprietary technology. If they had to release a binary of this level of functionality it might leave them open for competitors (or even our community) to reverse-engineer their firmware and alter the product in not-so-good of ways.

Imagine their problems "if" the radio could receive in the US blocked cellular band or transmit across the commercial FM, aviation or military 225-400 MHz bands?
