Actually, I too was recently looking for a low-cost "extra" GPS receiver. Although my project differs from yours, it sounds as if we both have the same idea in terms of wanting a simple, low-cost GPS unit. I ended up buying a used Garmin GPSII Plus on eBay for only $50. This receiver provides the necessary NMEA output to your Kenwood TM-D700A, and is very low-cost in relation to the more expensive GPSIII and GPSV units. If you look and are patient you can find a good GPSII or II Plus for a great price. Keep in mind that just any GPS unit won't do. You'll need on that provides NMEA output.

Good luck!

Very few GPS units take a 12V input. Don't learn the lesson the hard way like I did. You'll need some sort of step-down power converter to supply the voltage you need for the GPS.

Right now I have the Garmin eMap semi-permanently connected to my D700. Works like a charm but I had to hard-wire in a 12V->3V adapter. I used the pFranc connectors to manufacture my own cables (I also now have a similar cable for the TH-D7A HT).

In the future, I may look at some of the GPS "modules" that can be found fairly cheaply. These typically don't have any displays or significant user settings, but are designed specifically to interface to some external device (like the D700) using NMEA. That'll free up my eMap for other things. Supposedly you can find modules like this on eBay easily, but I don't have model numbers at my fingertips.

I use a Motorola Oncore GT+ GPS unit and the TAPR serial adapter. Works great. Runs 12V in and gives you NMEA out. The GPS is controlled via Motorolas WinOncore12 software, which is free. Search eBay for the Motorola Oncore and then www.TAPR.org for the interface for it. It'll run you a few bucks but it works great. For an antenna I use the "MultiBand Antenna" brand FILM GPS Antenna. About 2" square and sticks to the glass. Absolutely amazing. Here's the site for the antennas: http://www.multiband-antennas.com/ Model # is Paluse FLA-501 5V They're about $20.00 but they're worth it.

Good luck and enjoy APRS!

One of the OnCores came up on eBay just this past week. But it looked to me that by the time you buy one of those, plus some sort of RS-232 module, you're getting very close or higher than the price of a previously-enjoyed "regular" GPS unit. Last week's OnCores was from Australia, so shipping costs would probably make it *very* unattractive.
I'm still monitoring eBay, but I'm also looking at cheap used GPS units with some sort of PC interface. Since this will be used as a "module" I don't care about software or mapping displays or anything else.
For now, I just use my eMap. :-)

Ebay works sometimes... If you'd like a brand new one for less than $100 then check out the "Deluo" gpsr's

http://www.deluo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DE&Product_Code=GPSS&Category_Code=GR

Kind of a long link but www.deluo.com works also. Just look for the one SERIAL version for $89.90

They require a little hacking to make them work for what you want to do but is really simple. They require regulated 5V+. The cable that comes on them has two ends. One for the serial port and one for the mouse port to get the supply voltage. Cut the PS/2 end off and hook up a 7805 regulator and you're set.

I have the Deluo unit mentioned. It works very well with - some - software. When I run it with the Rand McNally software that comes with it, I have no problem. When I run it with UI-View, it looses its mind every ten to twenty minutes and then will re-initialize itself after another ten to twenty minutes (driving down the interstate at 70+ mph is not the time to play with the computer).

I spent the money for a Garmin III+ and the cable to power it from the car. Well worth the time, money and effort. Zero problems. I feed the Garmin directly into the K'wood D700, use UI-View and Precision Mapping. Needs only one serial cable from radio to lap top. Slick.
