I doubt mine is the cheapest possible option, but it's not bad. I have a Garmin Etrex and data/power cable combination that cost me just over $100.

Consider the Garmin GPS 18PC. Has a DB-9 connections and separate 12vdc power connection. Very straight-forward, excellent unit. We bought 10 of them for APRS tracking packages for Salvation Army disaster services; they're mated to the TM-D700. Also, less chance of theft as they have no screen. You can get them new through GPS City for about $75-80.

what does the GPS need in order to connect to the DM-700? Like do the Street Pilot C330's like the high end GPS models even communicate with the 700?

Pete,
Contact Mark Hamblin, AE5MH (ae5mh@cox.net). He put the packages together and programed the 'D700's'. He is our 'D700 Guru'.

I am new to GPS and would like to know basically what the kenwood D700A does when attached to a gps receiver. Does the rig act as a receiver? Do you need a separate receiver to connect to the rig and why? Why not just use a gps receiver in the first place? I guess I am just wondering why use the rig and a separate gps unit. I do not understand the connection between the two. Thanks es 73.
