I realize that your question was posted in 2005 and that you probably have an answer to it but here is the best answer I can give in case you or someone else is still looking for an answer. The TM-D700A when interfaced with a GPS takes the data and transmits it to the ham community. This has many applications in search and rescue, and ham activities. One other cool thing is that if the GPS accepts data input through the serial connection it can plot the stations received. So if you and your friends are meeting up somewhere you can tell how close you are to each other. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
