The FL-2100B is an accident waiting to happen; however, in general, there's nothing you really need to do except connect the keying line and hope for the best.

I've read all the reviews for this amp which seem to be good. So just with the leads I would what just need a lead from the amp to the cat port in the read of the 897.

People of wisdom, I am now getting informed that the FL2100B will not interface with the FT897D. MMM Reason issued, the FT897D is a new radio and the FL2100B is old. well derr.
.
I just need to know how I can do it, it must be able to be done surely. What do I need ??? how do I do it???

As Steve has indicated, it is dangerous to the radio keying circuit to directly key the amplifier relay.
I would instead buy an amplifier keying interface, like the one from www.k4poz.com, or key a small relay with the radio and have those relay contacts operate the amp keying line.

::They're wrong. The FL-2100B uses a low voltage (12Vdc), low current relay just like a modern Ameritron or many others. You can key it fine with the FT-897D relay terminal.
When I said it was an accident waiting to happen, I wasn't referring to this in particular. The whole amp is cheaply built from cheap components, from the two tiny little cooling fans to the bandswitch, to various capacitors used, etc. It's kind of a lower-cost knockoff of a Heathkit SB-200, but Heath used better parts. There are entire websites devoted entirely to how to fix and rebuild the FL-2100 series of amplifiers.
If yours has already been through this process, it's probably better today than it was when it was new!

The K4POZ keying interface does not require any external power. It needs only the input and output keying lines, and it will key AC or DC of either polarity.

The ARB 704 on the other hand will work with radios like the IC-706 that have a sensitive keying line, so if you have a radio that has an touchy keying system it will work. The fact it has an op-amp to work with certain radios is why it requires a 12V power source.
The relay in the FL2100 operates on 12 volts, but the current is high and there is no back-pulse canceling. This is bad on small relays or semiconductors in radios used to key the FL2100.
The FL2100 also has some issues. Some models have a very poorly designed feedback circuit that makes the amp unstable on upper bands. It also does not cut the tubes off on standby very well, so it can oscillate on upper HF while on "standby". You'll just have to see how yours behaves. They all don't have that problem.
