Speaker Wire Reply

Has anyone used a quality thick copper pvc sheathed speaker wire as an antenna? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using such a cable apart from cost. Is ther any diff in a thick Vs thin wire?

I have used all types and sizes of wire for HF antennas. Stranded copper wire with a PVC jacket should be about perfect as long as it can stand the physical load you put on it. Go for it!

The outer diameter of the conductor (not the insulation) does play a part in determining wavelength as well as antenna resistance for a given frequency. These factors are usually only considerred when you are cutting aluminum tubing to make elements of a beam type antenna. You don't need to worry about this if you are using flexable wire to make an HF antenna. Use the standard wire formulas for wavelengths and make the wire a few inches longer. You can trim off the excess when you fine tune your antenna.

hello,

I have good experience with 2-wire flat cable with 0.75mm^2 conductors. it is a divisible twincable. (or should I say "twin cord".)

In Germany it is called NYFAZ or H03VH-h.

I tried a dipole for 20m Band. Calculate the lenght of the NYFAZ in the following way: 5.50m (1/4 wavelenght of the band). Then add the length of your feeding line.

Split the cable in the length of 1/4 wavelength (e.g 5.50m). Put the antenna on your desired mast, and lay the remains (twin cord) to your TRX. There you can fit a UHF connector to the two wire ends.

Your dipole is ready !

The NYFAZ works like a symetric cable with abtou 75 Ohms. A little shorting of the dipol ends can be necessary.

You can use a 1:1 Balun on the end. But this a very easy an cheap aerial dipole.

You can also use twisted telephone cord but this will
have a higher impendance (abt. 100 Ohms)

Bye

Oli
