(from Randy, KF0X Tucson(
Hi,
Could you give me a little advice regarding a 2m antenna? I live an EXTREMELY restrictive neighborhood when it comes to antennas. I have a spot on top of a chimney with a metal plate which is about 1 ft by 1 ft square. I currently have a small mag mount up there. You barely notice it. Nobody has ever said anything about it. However, it has very poor coverage. I suspect the metal plate does not provide enough of a ground plane.
What would you recommend I purchase as a replacement? Maybe something that does not require a ground plane. Mag mount is fine, but I could try something else too as long as it is not too big. I would never get away with a regular base antenna or discone or anything like that. A Ringo Ranger would be way too noticeable. I would want as much gain as possible because I live in a suburban area with mountains. It is not easy to reach many of the Tucson repeaters. I am running a maximum of 50 watts.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Randy

Since you have mountains to deal with, higher is better. Line of site is the key.
If you think the ground plane is the problem, then you might try a 1/2 wave mobile antenna like a Larson 2/70. Very stealth and only about 33 inches tall.
Any other larger verticals will only squash your pattern and make it tougher to get over those mountains.
Good Luck,

The real answer to this question is MOVE. Why people want to live anyplace that tells you how, what, when, and where after you spend so much money on the house to start with is silly to me.
Remember you need abt a 19 inch <minumim> ground plane under a 2 meter antenna. Previous post talked abt a 1/2 wave. This might be a good choice for you as it requirs no ground plane. higher the better of course, and the more aluminum in the air the better too!!
