Can I put up a BUD (big ugly dish) and use ham radio as an excuse for putting it up? city ordnances here have restrictions on anything over a meter here and require special permits which must be approved by the commission to install. i know people used them for microwave and moonbounce, but I just want to watch TV with it. Suggestions, comments, ideas?

Probably NOT....
I strongly suggest you consider those small dish services or perhaps a standard TV antenna mounte outside or in the attic.

This subject is almost moot. In the very near future, Echostar (Dish Network's owner, and the largest sat service provider) will stop selling traditional sat services. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which, the fact the old low-power direct sats are being replaced with DB digital ones.

I dont think so.
dishnetwork does not have anything to do with c-band (big dish).
there is plenty of programming up there that does not require a subscription to dishnetwork or direct tv. Its called FTA ( Free to Air ) satellite. We are starting to see new recievers hit the market that decode most of the HD data streams from sporting games, news feeds, and network shows. This type of programming is not available anywhere else. Thing is alot of the Network feeds are on c-band and require a large dish, because of the high datarate signal there must be alot of gain. 10 foot dish's are a Minimum. Hey its just another expensive hobby I have just like ham radio.

I don't see why not.....Satellite dishes are preempted under federal law. I would do it ANYWAY, but then again, I don't take the "kind ham explaining his plight to the thugs" approach. Instead, I put up the antenna, and woe to ANY antenna Nazi who dares me.

Re LV...
Please site the specific part, paragraph, section, etc etc of the specific code that you are using as a basis of information so I can read it, the text, word for word.

i am pretty sure your thinking about the law that protects installation of dishes 1 meter or smaller in diameter. Unfortunately my dish is approx 3 meters in diameter.
