Well - it hasn't been approved yet so there are no comments allowed - but I wrote an article for eHam outlining how I am coping with my antenna limitations. The link is http://www.eham.net/articles/22237.

73 everyone - Keep smiling - Keep experimenting and for gosh sakes - Let's have some fun with this hobby!

When one is a contest zelot and or has the contest zelot philosophy 100% of the time (tho not in contesting) there is no such thing as FUN. Fun never enters the equasion unless by FUN you mean you crush your opposition on your way to obtaining the record high point total.

There is only one thing that brings satisfaction to a zelot contest personality...

Defineing your goal or objective and obtaining that goal in the most dominating fasion possible bringing glory to the operator. To a true zelot contest person or personality its all about personal prestige not fun.

Maybe you should try contesting sometime. I am sure you never have. It is 100% FUN. I'm a contester and have 100% fun whenever I get on the radio. Do I always try to crush my competition.... NO.
You won't never know how much fun it is if you never try it.

Re EY...

I have constested before and WE DID come in 2nd place on the NATIONAL LEVEL. We did it by usung PURE POWER and domination of our frquency and a little bit around us using a MAX power amp on a TRIAND beam attached to the top of a 65 foot football stadium.

The station who beat us was in the Virgin Islands. And even with an exotic location they only BARELY beat us by less than 1% of our point totals

I was the logger guy because I was not allowed to transmit. The ONLY PEOPLE allowed to even go near the radios were 5 people who could do 30 PLUS WPM CW in their sleep who worked in shifts of two people 3 hours per position. Time off was spent in SLEEP in the adjacent room.

We DOMINATED our frequency for the entire Field Day and raked in the points like leaves in the fall.

THAT is the way to contest--dominate, control, rake in the points using modes giving you MAX points per contact.

Contesting should NEVER be about fun if one is truly SERIOUS about contesting. It should always be about 'Personal Glory' and breaking that last record high point total. Fun shoulc NEVER even factor in. Fun is spelled LOSER.

AND in a related topic...ALWAYS LOOK for the loophole....

Look for the mode or class of operation in which there are FEW OPERATORS. In re to field day look for that class that has the very very fewest entrants looking for the loophole(s) that would permit you to operate in that class from a technical/rule read only standpoint.

Look for the edge that will give you the contact 'Kill Advantage' over your competition.

EXAMPLE...

Mobile--Most mobiles use those POS coil antennas that have little or no efficiency. SO YOU attach (somehow) a 4 band 33 ft long trap dipole to your bumper and drag behind the counterpoise. ALL THE RULES SAY is that you have to be able to move around--they did NOT say how much around did they?

"And even with an exotic location they only BARELY beat us by less than 1% of our point totals"

There are no location multipliers on Field Day. Exotic doesn't matter. DX doesn't matter. State, country, grid square or section doesn't matter. A QSO of 10 miles counts the same as one of 10,000 miles.

What does matter is where you are from a standpoint of having a good signal and reaching as many other stations on as many bands as possible. Stations in the middle of the country have an advantage over those on the coasts in that respect. Those on the edges, such as Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean, are at a disadvantage because they are so far from many of the population centers.

First off I amongst a lot of other people don't consider Field Day a contest (there are no exotic locations in Field Day). And I never participate in Field Day because of that reason. Try CQWW or IARU or any of the other international contests.

"I was the logger guy because I was not allowed to transmit."

You have really never experienced the fun of contesing if your not on the air (behind the mike or keyer).
Only logging in a contest is not the same. A real contester can do both at the same time.

"Contesting should NEVER be about fun if one is truly SERIOUS about contesting. It should always be about 'Personal Glory' and breaking that last record high point total. Fun shoulc NEVER even factor in. Fun is spelled LOSER."

I consider it FUN to the point I have about 20 certificates for first place in contests thru the years (and that was me operating and logging).

As I said....

"Contesting should NEVER be about fun if one is truly SERIOUS about contesting. It should always be about 'Personal Glory' and breaking that last record high point total. Fun shoulc NEVER even factor in. Fun is spelled LOSER."

And as to your statement...

I consider it FUN to the point I have about 20 certificates for first place in contests thru the years (and that was me operating and logging).

Unless you BEAT your last highest score for each particular event setting a NEW EVENT RECORD you lost. UNLESS you push yourself harder harder harder harder ad nasium you are accepting FAILURE as an option.

First place is first place no mater how you look at it.

One thing I still can't figure out is how in the world did you ever bring up contesting from a antenna restriction article????

K4REY is right. How the heck did my post about dealing with antenna restriction/limitations end up in a conversation about contesting??!!?? I posted my article in hopes of stimulating some other hams out there who may be "RF-Challenged" by their circumstances.
