Need help with inside apartment antenna, please! Reply
by KB3SGU on August 26, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Well I just passed my General exam and got my HF radio. BUT, I have ran into a snag with HF antenna. I have been doing some researching on indoor antennas and found what appears to be a good one. It is the MFJ-1622. The radio that I have has a antenna tuner built into it. The radio is a Kenwood TS-450S. I am a disabled Ham and this rig was loaned to me from Handi-Ham System for Hams that are disabled. I need to find the cheapest way that I can to come up with a inside antenna. I am on the 5th floor of the highrise that I live in. I am not able to install an antenna myself but I believe that I can get some help. This is why I was very interrested in the MFJ-1622. Now I do not know if their is any other antenna out there that may work so I am open to any suggestions! If someone may want to sell me an antenna that may work as cheap as they can, I would be very thankful! If you would like to, you can email me at kb3sgu@arrl.net

There is absolutely no such thing as a good indoor antenna.

Unfortunately Appartment Living automaticly rules out completely Amateur Radio as a hobby UNLESS one is also interested in camping and can take their hobby with them to the great out of doors.

Basicly you should have taken up stamp collecting.

While nothing beets a good outside antenna you CAN have some fun with one indors. Part of the alure, at least for me, is the oppertunity to experiment and solve problems. While I know nothing about the MFJ antenna I do want to wish you "good luck" in your trials.

RE NDB...

PROVE I lied....

PROVE that any kind of an indoor antenna is going to beat a properly installed tribander up 50 feet consistantely day in and day out. GO head, tell ya what, lets wager: a virtual burger meal consisting of a virtual double meat whopper with cheese, fries, a large choco chake and of course a hot pie of choice.

Stop throwing sunshine up peoples skirts and then perhaps people will learn to accept as pure fact the cruel realities of life as FACT NOT FICTION over which they have absolutely no control over..

Let's try to help Patrick out here. Like me, he's trying to do the best he can with what he has to work with. While not optimal, it's not hopeless.

Patrick, congratulations on passing your General exam!

Yes, your situation will be somewhat challenging. I'm in the same boat. While I do have a small balcony, I must take down my antenna when I'm not using it.

I've had some reasonable success with a PAC-12 (www.pacificantenna.com) on my 2nd floor apartment balcony and also with a Buddipole (www.buddipole.com) in various configurations on a mast. I typically run a Yaesu FT-857D at about 65 watts.

I find it helpful to use an antenna analyzer to adjust my antenna instead of relying on an antenna tuner to just match the feedline impedance. I figure I can't afford to waste power heating my feedline.

I experimented with some stealth wire antennas, screwdrivers, etc., but found the best results for my situation was a simple vertical. Experimenting can be part of the fun, honest!

Good luck and don't give up!

While I hate to see those two guys arguing about how many angels can fit on the head of a pin, I must agree that any inside antenna is going to be bad compramise at best. It is a shame that the building owner can't work with you and allow you to have an outside antenna or something on the roof. You are just asking for a peck of problems with indoor radiators. Everything you own that works by plugging it into the wall will all of a sudden become the worlds best receiver and you are going to be a star on your neighbor's TVs and radios. Sorry that I am unable to offer you any help but I have been there and it just doesn't work....good luck
