Ham radio operators are also senators, astronauts, doctors, child molestors, and mass murderers.
I see no connection between what Mitnick's famous for, and ham radio. In fact there is a supreme contradiction between participating in a legal activity designed to enhance public safety, and subverting public computer networks for nefarious purposes.
If we want the media to point out who is a ham radio operator, I can think of a bazillion other people who are far better models for youth than Mitnick.

N3QE:"Ham radio operators are also senators, astronauts, doctors, child molestors, and mass murderers."
You omitted one, spies. Robert Hanssen, ex-k9QVE, and FBI supervising special agent.
"I see no connection between what Mitnick's famous for, and ham radio."
Did you read the entire article? There was and there is. Technical curiousity, for one. Being challenged to learn something. Solving a problem or two.
" In fact there is a supreme contradiction between participating in a legal activity designed to enhance public safety, and subverting....."
You must be an EMCOMMer. Perhaps a professional who's using amateur radio as a "back channel" for your work. BTW, you didn't mention the other Part 97 requisites including, but not limited to enhancing technical knowledge.
I think the article is a good read, frankly, and relevant to amateur radio.
Interesting comment about the best justice money can buy. Just look at the OJ Simpson case. Contrast that with the typical hapless accused represented by a public defender. He always loses, whether guilty or innocent.

Interesting article. I see his point about what he was charged with.
He's definitely right about the justice system being controlled by money. Many a celebrity has gotten off with a slap on the wrist because of who they are and the money they have.

It's nice to hear that N6NHG is making a good living. He seems to have reformed after paying the penalty for his illegal actions.

I'm a little perplexed, now that I've had time to think about what you said.
Besides not including spies, I think you're overboard on one or two.
I seem to recall someone once saying that Jim Jones of Guyana infam, was once a ham. And, I guess Barry Goldwater meets the senate membership claim, although none are now.
But, you didn't include Congressmen. Dave Ross, WD5DVR is one. You also didn't mention "lawyers and Indian Chiefs." Lots of those, too, are hams.

Kevin is not a ham, or a hacker, or a security consultant.
If he claims associations with any techie group, it's only because he wants that association to further his manipulative psychopathic abilities and desires.
The amazing thing is, he can talk to a reporter about how he has used his powers of psychotic manipulation in the past, and he comes out sounding like an interesting guy. That in itself should tell you how manipulative he can be. He's not doing any good anywhere, he's simply gaming the system, whether it be the ham community, the phone company, a private company he dupes into giving its secret away, a reporter, or a bunch of rubes who visit a ham website.

N3QE, you are wrong. A database search shows you he is licensed as N6NHG. He does do security consulting, and speaks at conventions, and I know because he's talked to me about speaking at some of these conventions. We also briefly talked about ham radio. He's only active on VHF & UHF these days (well,in 2006). Yes, Kevin had an obsessive personality, but psychopath? If that was true, they would have sent him to a mental hospital and not prison. He did his time. Now he's out, trying to make a living in a world that's tough to people who have a record. Give the guy a break.
