"When severe weather hits Covington County and knocks out all other forms of communication, often the only media that can stay on the air are amateur radio operators". So the AM, FM and TV stations shut down and the hams stay up? yea. Right. We believe that......NOT.

To W9WHE YES ! On Oct 15 2006 when the Big Island experienced magnitude 6.7 and 6.0 quakes off the it's NW coast there was a much smaller tremor on Oahu. However the Electic Co shut down generators as a precaution and Oahu was without power for up to 36 hours. The only comms for a period after the ' event ' were the Statewide EARC/RACES VHF and HF Nets which were active for the rest of that long day.. My neighbours that morning queried why only hams were heard on my HT and no AM/FM/TV stations ;) Since then the Honolulu BC/TV stations have set up better preparedness plans ;) Aloha ! KH6/G3SEA

Does that mean that the 50% of Verizon cell sites with back up generators were also down? Don't your local PS systems have back up power? Gosh, I hope not.

In the period immediately after the event there were no Oahu BC stations disseminating information. One, KSSK came up on an emergency generator but the DJ's and News Hounds arrived later. Cell Phone service was obviously disrupted since it's not economically feasible to have emergency gen's for all cell sites. Landline phones were fine ( since Telco supplies the 60v/20mA ) and obviously dial-up Internet access with a laptop on batteries was fine. Since that event the State has mandated steps to avoid this situation in the future. The Hawaii EARC/RACES VHF/HF Net Hams provided a valuable service in coordinating with Civil Defence/Red Cross.
