Noise floor and dynamic range Yaesu FT 101ZD Reply

I looked on Sherwoods website for some info on the Yaesu FT 101ZD and i cant find anything pertaining to the dynamic range and the noise floor. It has the FT 101 E but not the later ZD model.

There was a Product Review of the 101ZD in the December, 1979 issue of QST.

Those generally included dynamic range, but I don't think they had noise floor figures.

Unfortunately, the review is not available on the ARRL web site (they go back only to January, 1980).

Perhaps someone has a hard copy they can send you.

Best of luck.

I can tell you from experience it is better than the early FT101's I've owned but not very much better.

The FT101ZD I had here, and sold a few years ago, was in the 65 dB or so dynamic range area. Noise floor was acceptable, but then that is true for almost any radio. So expect it to be one of the "worser" common radios. :-)

One nasty with 'ZD is when you operate on 18MHz. On transmit, the second harmonic of the 9MHz IF was only 20 to 25dB down on the three I've looked at.

Rob Sherwood does a good job with this stuff and probably just didn't have a 101ZD to test.

If you call him and arrange to send him your 101ZD, he'd likely test it and publish the results, and then when you get it back, you'll be the one responsible for the report! Good bragging rights. :-)

A review, such as it is of the FT-101zd appears in the December 1979 edition of QST. It is available on the ARRL web site though the quality of the PDF file in which it is archived is poor. You may access and search the QST archive if your are an ARRL member. Search for FT-101ZD and you will find it.

Own one of those once, the MK II variant, it was a nice rig. I used it for about 10 years then traded up.

I almost forgot some numbers:

MDS -139DB

Blocking above MDS 112DB

IMD 78DB

These values are as copied from the QST Review of December 1979.
