Johnson Viking II mic connector ? Reply
by N4NYY on September 28, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I am about to start a restore on a Johnson Viking II that appears to be stock and in decent shape. However, it has a rather large 3 pin twist on. I have not been doing restorations very long, but I do not think I have ever seen this connector. I suppose I can change it to a 4 pin CB female, as I have several scrap CBs around, as well as some mics wired for them. I do not have anything remotely close to this connector. Was this a common connector?

The original microphone connector for the Viking II was a quarter inch phone plug. So, more than likely a previous owner changed to fit whatever kind of mike he had on hand. So you can either return to origial (not so hard to do unless the owner enlarged the mounting hole) or use a connector to fit your mike.
Your mike should be a high impedance unamplified type if the audio section of the rig is unmodified.
A problem with many Boat Anchor rigs are mods made by previous owners. A few are good many are worthless and some are just butchery!!!
Good luck.

If it's three pin I suspect it is for a relay (PTT).

I agree with one post, some of these 'mods' are butcher jobs.

Check to see if there is a relay in the rig.

Some Vikings came with a relay as they were used for civil defense.
Some still have the 'CD" sticker on the front.

If so, and provided the original mic hole is'nt butchered to much, you might be able to use a regular phone plug jack found at any rat shack.

If it is, then your only option as I can see is get a small piece of sheet metal (16 ga.) square, and drill a mic connector hole, attach with rivets or screws.

Not 'original', but taking out metal (butchering) is easy, trying to put it back is the problem.

Good luck.
