Heathkit HW-101 Repair. Reply
by KD7KOY on October 28, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Hi.
I have a Heathkit HW-101.
The receive drops about 1-2 minutes after it is turned on. Except for that, everything works well.

Is there a repair service that specializes in these radios today?

I do not want to do it myself as I do not have the gear or the expertise in repairing this kind of radio.

I want someone reputable and knows Heathkits.
Thanks..

Sounds like a bad receiver RF amplifier V10 and/or receiver first mixer V11. Both tubes were 6HS6s. These tubes failed quite often in the HW-101 resulting in a failed receiver.

Both tubes are on the RF Driver circuit board. V10 and V11 are the 2 tubes closest to the right edge of the board (front panel facing you). The other tubes are V6 (transmit mixer) and V7 (driver), both close to the variable capacitors.

Replace V10 and V11 with "6AU6" tubes. No modification required. I have 2 HW-101s and both of them had bad V10 and V11 tubes resulting in a failed receiver.

Thanks but the tube substitute does'nt work.

Is there any shops that take Heathkits?
The 'shotgun' approach to radio repair can get expensive.

Rather have it gone over by a tech so I know it works.

Thanks.

Find some Ham with a tube tester and test the tubes.

That will locate and cure 90% of the possible problems.

If you are going to keep tube type gear, buy yourself a dynamic tube tester.

It will pay for itself over and over.

90% of problems are tubes.

My advice (take it for what it's worth) is that if you are going to use older gear, you should invest a lot of time into the study of electronics. Back in the 40's to 60's there were books on troubleshooting radios and other entertainment items also older ARRL handbooks are great. You can still find these books at swap fests,eBay and old book stores. The information is still good for boat anchors.
You will find that repairing equipment is a lot of fun and a lot less costly than paying someone else to do it. You will need some test equipment mainly a DVM and perhaps a used VTVM, tube tester a basic signal generator etc.
Consider that you are paying $115.00 plus shipping both ways to have someone troubleshoot your HW-101
(parts and repair extra) a rig that is barely worth that amount in excellent condition.
Good Luck
Allen
