Im going to Dayton!
Hope it dont rain.
What a great chance to buy a New Yaesu FT-857D!!!
Question: I have heard from several 857 owners who had or currently have a 6 meter ssb power out problem.
Has Yaesu fixed this particular issue?
Is it safe now to buy a 857D?
I suspect some of the 5/5 reviews here on Eham are from owners who havent checked the 6 meter ssb transmit (yet).
Thanks in advance,
Ken

I have an original 857 and have no such problem. However, I have had problems with other rigs with other 6 meter antennas and had problems similar to what can be caused with 10 meter installations (feedback, oscillation, rf getting into the little computer chips on the rig and funking up everything).

After 35 years of hamming, I decided to go mobile since condos are not very ham radio-friendly. But I never thought I would be asking a question like this. You mentioned the power output on the FT-857D, and I have had a similar experience when the power out will drop by about 25% on a random basis.
That is when I found my rig has NO RF OUT control on it! I run a FT-890, a FT847, both of which have two concentric knobs, one labeled Mic Gain, the other RF OUT. But not the 857D.
Am I just stupid or what? I've read the manual many times and the closest thing I find is setting a power maximum per band.
In running the 857D mobile, I need to run at reduced power to avoid burning up the car's electronics. Any hints?
de, W4REB
