Well, I have placed my first and most likely last order with Universal Radio. Maybe I've been spoiled by Ham Radio Outlet and AES and their prompt shipping, sending of shipping confirmations and tracking numbers and backorder notification.
I ordered a speaker-mic, a cable and a pack of QSL cards on 12/30/06. I received the email acknowledging my order and then nothing. I understand that they were closed for New Year's. That's why I waited until Tuesday 1/3/07 to call for an update. I was informed that my order shipped out 1/3 and they gave me a tracking number. They also told me that the speaker-mic was backordered and not expected until 1/15/07.
I received my cable and QSL cards on Friday 1/5/07. On Sunday 1/7/07 I saw that my credit card had been charged for the amount of the speaker-mic. Since I still hadn't received any kind of email from Universal I called and checked the status of my order. I was informed by a man who didn't identify himself and didn't seem very pleased that his phone rang that the speaker-mic shipped Friday 1/5/07 and he gave me a tracking number.
I placed my order with Universal Radio because they had a much better price for the speaker-mic than either HRO or AES. Universal Radio's website and the order confirmation email they sent me stated they would send me tracking numbers and backorder notifications via email. As of this writing I still have not received any communication from Universal except the initial order confirmation. That coupled with talking to grouchy people on the phone have forced me to the conclusion that Universal Radio doesn't want my money that badly.
On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best I would give Universal Radio a 2.

Hang on there. You placed the order on Saturday December 30th, a period when most companies would be running on reduced staff due to the holiday period. It's also a day when (maybe) the US Postal service would be closed as it's the weekend before New Year. Not sure about the courier companies though. You then have two days when not much will be happening, Sunday 31st December and Monday 1st January (Happy New Year by the way).
There are then four days when folk actually get some work done, Tuesday January 2nd to Friday January 5th. Then another weekend, followed by your complaint posted to Eham on the Monday.
So, after placing the order on the weekend before New Year and waiting only four working days you decide to post this complaint.
Come back in a week when you might have something to complain about.

Just remembered, a lot of places in the USA would probably be closed on January 2nd as well for the funeral of President Gerald Ford. There are therefore three working days after your order, not four.

Thanks for completely missing the point of my post. Did you even read the part where I said I understood about being closed for the holiday?
My problem with Universal Radio is that they told me they would do something and then didn't. They said the would send me tracking numbers and a backorder notification and they didn't. I still (Monday 1/8/2007 23:50 CST) haven't received any communication of any kind from Universal except for the initial order confirmation.

----------------
If you had no communication other than the original order confirmation, then how is it you had a telephone conversation with someone?

They said the would send me tracking numbers and a backorder notification and they didn't.
-------------
If that happened to me I would have called them by telephone to get the tracking numbers for my order by phone instead of complaining on a website.
Perhaps i would have been thinking that email isn't always reliable and I should give them a call?
After all, there are quite a few spam filters these days. I think AOL and Yahoo are the worst for filtering out legitimate messages as junk mail.
Sometimes email can be filtered out by your ISP before you even have the chance to download it to your PC.
No offense but I think your entire complaint is unreasonable in light of the holidays and little timeframe involved and the "one" attempt made to request a tracking number for a backordered shipment that won't even be shipped until 4 days from today's date in the future.

KC8VWM, you are a moron. Once again someone has posted a snotty comment to my review without seeming to have read and comprehended my post.
I use gmail. Universal had no problem sending the confirmation message to my gmail account. Because of this I don't think the problem is a spam filter but rather the other emails were never sent.
I did call Universal both times to get the tracking numbers they should have sent me and didn't. What? Did you think I just picked numbers out of a hat or something?
The whole point of this forum is to share experiences with various companies so other hams know who to avoid and who to patronize. If you want to call a negative review "complaining on a website" that's your business, but I would rather be informed of problems someone had with a company than just read that someone is an AAAAAAA+++++++++ seller.
Just as a side note, I have received everything I ordered from Universal Radio. My beef with them is about their shipping and backorder notification system. If they had said "Call us in a few days for a tracking" number that would have been fine. But they didn't. Universal didn't do what they said they would do, and that's the bottom line.

Having read your original complaint, I think the following summary is reasonable. Correct me if I am wrong.
* You placed an order with Universal Radio on the Saturday of a Holiday weekend.
* Two in-stock items arrived on your doorstep 6 days later in spite of the holidays.
* One back-ordered item, which they were not expecting to have in stock until 1/15, came in early and was shipped on 1/5 and was probably on your doorstep on the 9th or 10th (just guessing), which was still before they even expected to have it in stock.
* You had expected to receive tracking numbers for the shipments when they went out, but did not receive them.
Your complaint about them not sending tracking numbers might be reasonable. I personally have never ordered form them, so I don't know if they typically promise tracking numbers or not - I will take your word for it that you were promised tracking numbers via email. Based on your complaint, all things considered, I wouldn't hesitate to order from them. It sounds like they filled your order promptly and accurately, they just didn't follow through with the tracking numbers. Considering the holidays and that they were probably short staffed, I personally would not burn them at the stake for that. Hell, I've ordered from companies that had items in stock that took more than two weeks to get the items to me without any holidays to complicate things.
Just my $.02

I agree with ORM. I cant understand why companies can take orders, charge your card. Then leave you in the dark. Many a times, I have placed orders or bought on ebay and they take the money. Then nothing. Its not real hard to answer a email.
Bob Heil, Burghart, Associated Radio, All good about returning email. TNX to them.
Good luck in the future OM.

So what is the big deal? You didn't receive an email with the tracking number-maybe it was lost in cyberspace. That happens. You called them up and got a tracking number, what did that take-90 seconds out of your incredibly busy day?
