When was the last time your heard anything other than 5NN (or 599) for a contest RST report? Never, I'll bet. I know I've never heard anything but 5NN. And I don't believe I've ever heard 5NN sent at anything less than 50 WPM in any contest, either, whether the copying station sent his original call at 5 WPM or 25 WPM.

Sheesh.

So I'm asking myself, why do we bother with this? Let's just stick to the meaningful exchanges, the things that change from one QSO to the next, like the serial number used in the WPX contest.

This would be a start. I think contest procedures have gotten just a little bit too rote, and getting rid of the ubiquitous 5NN would be a good first step.

73, and rant off.

Why not suggest it to the contest sponsors? Posting here will have little effect. Instead, simply ask others to also suggest the same to the contest sponsors.

Actually, I have written letters about this to the New York Times, to both my state senators, and to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Sheesh.

Just think of "5NN" as a prosign or abbreviation that means "The meaningful exchange information follows".

So I'm asking myself, why do we bother with this?

Because it's in the contest rules that we exchange a signal report. Nothing in the rules that says it has to be the real report, just a report. So to simplify things we all agree to just send 599.

I hope you'll be able to deal with this.

Another case of much ado about nothing from someone who complains about almost everything associated with amateur radio operating.

This is not true, I have worked many stations in EU during WAE that give signal reports other than 599.

I agree.

"5NN" in a contest can just be considered a synchronization signal. It's really helpful in marginal conditions.
