On the topic of Trivia...

Almost all contests are run on the weekends. Why not have contests run on the weekdays (mon thru Fri)? The logic behind the question being that all the big name stores and a hell of a lot of smaller stores are open 7 days a week.

What makes the two days of Sat and Sun so hmmmm lack of a better word comming to mind: special?

Disclaimer...
As stated above this is just a trivia (HMMMMM I wonder) question.

Contest schedules are a relic of patriarchal Judeo-Christian-centric 1950's America in which contesters (men) worked during the week and took their sabbaths on Saturday and Sunday while the women kept house and did the shopping during the entire week. While this paradigm may not actually reflect present cultural norms, it continues to reflect the norms of the hobby as the median age of amateurs advances at approximately the same rate as time. Therefore, contests will continue to be held on weekends for the foreseeable future, even after the most ardent participants have gone onto public assistance and no longer work regular jobs.

Several contests do take place during the week, including:

1. ARRL School Club roundup-runs an entire week
2. Canada day Contest-every July 1, which is often a weekday
3. Ten Ten Day sprint-Every October 10th, which is often a weekday
4. The NCCC sprints, which are every Thursday night, and alot of fun.
5. The Novice Roundup used to also run a week.

What does stores being open have to do with amateur radio contests?

There was a time, not so long ago, when many stores weren't open on weekends, or were only open a half-day on Saturday. In many places there were "blue laws" which prohibited doing many kinds of business on Sunday.

As a result, a lot of activities couldn't be done on a Sunday, or even a Saturday afternoon. Thus the custom of scheduling contests then, to maximize participation.

What days do you go to work?

Or, do you work?

Most people don't work or go to school on those two days.
