Good for you.. You are starting down an exciting path when you enter the world of amateur radio contesting. The best thing for a bigginer to do is whatever he/she is comfortable with. When a person calls cq in a contest, that person is said to be a run station.. You call at your pace and should get replies at the same pace. At some point however there will be a station that has a faster pace or a bigger signal or a rare multiplier etc who will be near your frequency and they will probably chase you away. The qrm from the other "runner" or simply the pile up of stations calling the runner.. Either way enjoy your run , and when your run comes to an end be happy that you worked all the stations you could.. The more you run, the better you will get. Heck, the more you contest the better you will get. Also if you find a local group that has a multi-op station, it is highly recomended that you check it out. Most contest groups are always looking for new contesters, and many groups enjoy mentoring or "farming" fresh blood. Sort of like pro sports teams they take pride in seeing their trainees succeed.
From my own experiance, CW contesting is probably the most difficult aspect of contesting. At the same time, some of the most understandig op's are on the other side so dont worry about mistakes or needing repeats. Try late night stints at a multi op station.. Even just wearing the headphones while someone else is operating. Every time you put an honest effort into a cw contest your copy and speed will improve. most of all dont be discouraged keep your chin up and hang tough.. Contesting is as close to full contact as amature radio gets.. See you in the pile ups... 73 de KB1NRB

I am going to disagree with many in this thread.
I think that as a beginner it is often much more efficient to call CQ. There are several reasons.

- You reduce the variables.
- You get to control the pace of the contacts.
- On CW you get to pick the speed - even though some will call you faster.
