Hi all,
I have started to become more active in contests. I find that after a couple of hours, my ears begin to HURT while using my stereo headphones (Sony MDR-V6). I tried a friend's David Clark phones, and they felt comfortable, though of course, I only wore them for a minute.
Though I work primarily CW, I'd like to get phones with a mic for the occasional SSB contest. Right now, I'm using an Omni VI+. I hope to move up to a K3 one day.
What do you recommend?
Tnx and 73,
-Rich, W2EG

There are two basic types of earphones - on the ear and over the ear. Most are on the ear.
The problem with that type, esp for people that wear glasses, is that the ear is pressed down to the head, crunching the eyeglass stem between head and ear. For me that is the primary discomfort with on-the-ear types.
The over-the-ear type surrounds the ear, so no pressure between ear and eyeglass stem. Most people with glasses will find that more comfortable.
I use an aviation headset, used to use the Heil Pro and Pro Plus. With glasses the aviation headset is more confortable for extended periods, like contests.
There is two other advantages I like with the aviation headsets - they block out some 24 db or so of outside noise. And the mic is sound suppressing except towards the operator's mouth. Reduces room pickup, blower noise, etc.
However the aviation mic mimics the output of an old-style carbon mike, so is not directly compatible with amateur gear. An adapter can be made, however, that solves that problem.

I agree that the Heil over the ear headset is the most comfortable I have ever used. Spent many hours such as field day without any discomfort. I bought mine used from a fellow here on this site. A nice feature is the mic boom swings up out of the way for cw operation. I've tried the aviation headset and they are excellent, just generally a lot more expensive than the Heil.
Good Luck on your quest for comfort.

For what it's worth, I use the Heil pro set and like it very much. It's over both ears and sometimes I don't even hear the phone ring...wait, that may be a good thing.

I use the Heil Pro Set Plus also. They work Great. Add the foot switch which keys the radio and the amp and you have 2 hands free to operate.

Heil Pro Set Plus. Dual elements, the most comfortable headphones I've worn, and reasonably priced.
