As a contest operator, and general operator I enjoy all aspects of this hobby. There isn't one aspect of the hobby in terms of activities I favor from one to the other. I don't have one frequency I call home or mine. For this reason I don't have the problem many of these complainers have. Their set in their way and there's nothing they've ever done wrong and couldn't do wrong. Their perfect in every way!
Now I would like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge!
I've been seeing forums, and post after post digging their claws at contest folks like we are hoodlums. As thick skinned as I am I bring myself to asking these questions to figure out what's the real problem.
Is it me, or can NETS be as rude and take up more air time all year on all bands than contests?
Try staying on frequency, or 1 Khz +/- on an already crowed band before a NET and they have the nerve to ask you to move. Am I the only one that finds this rude, obnoxious and narcissistic?
Don't get me wrong I'm not apposed to NETS, but certainly frown on this type of behavior. If you don't comply your the bad guy and sometimes they start up anyway. Yet, they have the ordasity to complain about contest groups.
Think about this! CQWW or the WPX Biggest contests of the year with the most exposure so it's not like they start up on a whim. It only runs a few weekends out of the year. Can it be possible that folks who complains their weekend operators not know about these contests?
Something else to ponder! Do we have to many special events and smaller contests? Are there as many smaller contests as there are NETS for everything under the sun and still more and more NETS are being added taking up hours of air time on all bands every day of the week? When do we say enough already?
Lot of questions I know, but where do we start?
PLEASE, people lets be civilized about this for once and come up with valid suggestions. NO BASHING!

Those who prefer Nets to Contests can use this fine product:

KG4MZS,
It's not about frequency ownership. It's about conduct and principal!

I think fundamentalism - any form of fundamentalism - is the scourge of modern man.
Your mileage my vary.

The weekend I decided to brave the waters and make my first CW QSO happened to coincide with some huge international contest. Bands were packed.
What could I do?
Easy.
I went to 17 meters and worked Oxnard from Houston.
Was a pretty cool feeling to do that.

I know the nets are there, but in the case of CQ WW DX or ARRL DX or the Sweepstakes how can a net refusing to budge its frequency even be noticed in terms of raw power and QRM?
You can try to paint it as unstoppable force vs immoveable object, but when the object is tiny and just swarmed over and around by the hordes, none of the hordes are gonna notice while the object will feel that they're doing a mighty deed by defending their little Alamo.

I generally move for the nets if I am asked, even during CQWW. I NEVER move when I am told. I realize nobody owns a frequency, but I think it is good form to surrender the frequency to a legitimate net if they approach me. Now, if someone tells me "our net starts in five minutes, QSY," they better start looking for a clear frequency!

There's nothing complicated here and nothing new. There are just as many nasty, obsessed contest operators as there are nasty, obsessed net participants. Any net is, if they're doing it right, prepared to regroup on a nearby clear frequency when the regular frequency is a bad spot for ANY reason. If you imagine your net is important, that's just part of running it. And no contest requires operation on any specific frequency. Net operators whose knuckles don't reach the ground in their normal posture will, if they would like to clear the net frequency prior to starting, inform the other station that the net is set to begin there and will ASK if it's possible to QSY. Only a boor will flatly refuse to consider it. There are a few long-standing nets that any good operator will know about and will give some room. 14.300 is obvious, since it amounts to an international maritime mobile emergency frequency and is sometimes used by boat operators who are not hams and sometimes under extreme stress, but the net operations there are pretty much continuous anyway.
