Iraq Update Reply

This is an update to a thread I posted back in October 2007:

http://www.eham.net/forums/DXing/4428

Iraqi ham operatrions were authorized again staring on 22 Nov 07.

Iraqi calls are YI and all Coalition persons get a YI9 prefix - the 9 indicates a tempoary 1 year permit. Thus my call is YI9AJO.

I finally got on the air in Iraq! Had a SSB QSO with Finland (OH2K) on 20 meters 14.267 yesterday at 1435 GMT. Conditions were fair to good yeilding a 5/4 then a 5/8 report.

I bought a 40m Carolina Windom dipole and it is up about 30 feet. That's the best I can do for now. One end is anchored on the third floor balcony of a nearby building with the other end on a light pole. If I can find someone with a cherry picker I'll raise the lightpole end to 70 feet.

My shack is simple. I'm using my Yaesu FT-840 (100 watt) for now. Sits on the small refridge in my two man room next to my bed. Power comes from an MFJ-4125 25 amp power supply (it is 110/220v selectable). An LDG AT-100 autotunner rounds it out. When my 50 watt THP amp gets here I'll be using my FT-817 and I will put up some sort of 2m antenna.

Thanks for all the help!

Tony

I'm curious--how easy was it to get licensed? What procedures had to be followed, and roughly how long did it take?

I look forward to working you, and THANK YOU for being there!

It was a PITA to get an Iraqi permit. It took from April until Oct. I had to submitt a copy of my US license, a photo, a fill out form and another document, all by email. I submitted the docs at least four times, maybe more.

I think part of my problem was that right when I submitted, ham operations were suspended. No one knew what to do with new applications. Weeks would go by with no response. But in Oct it just happened. But I still had to wait until Nov 22 to broadcast.

My bet is that it will take a lot less time now than it did in 2007.

As with most things in Iraq, patience is needed.

I am actually getting ready to deploy to IRAQ in September. I currently am only a Technician but my goal is to study and pass the General by the end of August. My question is, are ham radio's allowed to be used all over Iraq or just specific bases? I don't know what FOB i'm going to. And, what is the status of 2m or 70cm? Was thinking of taking my HT with me but not sure if it's even worth it.

Thanks for any info!

I am currently operating from Mosul as YI/AB2M (I was granted permission to sign thusly while awaiting my own YI call). I received permission from the base Frequency Manager and the Mayor Cell S-6 office.

I am operating HF. I have my HT with me but to be honest I haven't even bothered looking for repeaters yet. If I do (and find out anything interesting), I will let you know.

If you are at Marez/Diamondback (or come here), look me up; ab2m@ab2m.net.
