Any Kingman Activations Planned? Reply

I think the last Kingman DX-ped was in 2000. Has anyone heard of a new dx-pedition to Kingman being planned?

Why not start one up on your own? I can steer you to who you could talk to about the details.

I'll do that after I work it first - hi hi.

Maybe it's just a ham myth, but can't you get credit for a DXCC that you activate if someone at your station works you on your DXPedition?

Actually I found it. Basic DXCC rules, Section 10:

"Contacts made by an operator other than the licensee must be made from a station owned and usually operated by the licensee and must be made in accordance with the regulations governing the license grant."

I can come to *your station* and operate as *KY6R* with your permission and those contacts would count for you.

Probably a little strange if you're using KH5K/KY6R for the expedition... probably worth checking with the ARRL on the exact rules, but I think this was done for some ops, for example, who went to BS7...

It's a good enticement for DXers who have the means and the connections to activate the rarest of the rare, it's good to have a rule loophole to allow them to get credit for the ultra-difficult ones if they go and activate them.

Nothing beats hearing your call coming back to *you* from a rare entity, though.

I'd like to see one thing change in the DXCC rules in this regard. A category called Activated, to go along with Mixed, CW, SSB, Digital, etc. I see it working this way: if you've activated an entity that you've never actually worked before you get an "activated" credit that counts for DXCC under your primary call. Once another DXpedition comes along and you work and confirm it, your "activated" credit goes away and is replaced by a traditional credit.

Of course there'd need to be some sort of refinement to this type of thing, but the basic gist is a way for you to get credit for rare ones by activating them. I personally like that solution better than having a friend work you from your own station...that rings hollow with me.

W2IRT: I agree - and your idea is a pretty good one. You get the counter for being the DX, and then it just changes "type" when you work the DX. For the award credits - a point is a point, and the devil is just in the details.

There should be an award for those who go on DX-peditions - not just the Colvin Award or the "DX-ped of the Year kind of thing - but for those who go and give out all the counters to so many.

But the way it's set up now doesn't require a rule change and rewriting everything and the thrashing about...

The way it's set up now, it's easy to get credit for activating it (just have a friend help) and you can still work it "for real" later if you want and there's an activation.

An award for "activation" in particular would be interesting... but an "activated" category within DXCC is unnecessary, in that it essentially already exists.

By the way, I like to DX by my own rules and am not particularly concerned with an official tick mark in Newington...

Maybe I'm an oddball in that respect?

I don't think we need to compound the DXCC backlog by adding new things that need to be kept track of ;-)

N3OX - I agree - don't fix what isn't broken. And honestly, it would take a lot more than a single DX-er like myself to try to activate any entity under the Fish and Wildlife's Jurisdiction - like KP1, KP5 or K5K.

So - these are really just "musings", and all interesting "what ifs"..

I have a few neighbors in the SF Bay Area who have organized such DX-peditions, and they take years to plan, and have a huge cost and sometimes a real political battle to make happen.

No, I will just wait until they are activated, and then see if I can join a future DX-ped team that goes somewhere in the Pacific - where I can stop over in Hawaii, which is an easy vacation destination from 6 land.

Now - if I could just get a month off from work . . . . .
