I was trying to work ZV5R last night on 40M CW.
In addition to a couple of slow-sending straight-key guys who were on the DX's frequency trying to call the DX (very very slowly), there were at least three frequency cops telling them "UP" and "QRT LID" and a number of different CW abbreviations for swear words etc.
They were all exactly on the DX's frequency - and all about 20 to 30 db above S9.
The end result, even though the DX was coming in 599, was that I at least couldn't hear him except for a few brief seconds each minute when the fracas wasn't going wild. The DX could've called me back a dozen times but I never would've heard him.
Wow, that was out of control. I come away convinced that all of them had no other goal but to QRM the DX. I'd like to give them benefit of the doubt but I can't.

Hi:
You are not alone. I have limited time at evenings, so I felt this would be a relatively easy contact to make. Imagine my surprise when I hear an f-bomb come back instead of a callsign / report.
No luck here as well.
Funny thing. When I began working CW to a point where I could feel comfortable on the air, I was looking forward to less policing. My mistake. I see now the policing goes on regardless of mode.

I'm not sure why there would have been such a feeding frenzy over this one, except as an IOTA, SA-026.
Last night I came across ZV5R calling CQ on 40m and worked him easily with one call with 100 watts. I was going to put out a spot, but decided not because of this posting.

Do not attempt to explain the behavior of very young children, or people who act like them

There's been a lot of other truly "fun" DX on 40M the past few nights. Not sure why I got so drawn up and frustrated by one single pile-up... lots of good, "real" QSO's with the southern hemisphere and far east, and an amazing opening to Australia from my QTH in the late afternoon on 40M CW that just came out of nowhere (I was getting 589 and 599 reports!), and they were fun, true chats, and there weren't any lids!

When conditions are marginal and the DX pickings are slim, even regular fare like KP2 and KP4 will generate pileups, especially when the op at the other end is making QSOs at a zippy rate. DXers like to keep their pileup skills sharp! (And maybe the same applies to the KC cops, et al...) :-)
The late afternoon long path opening from the eastern US to VK/ZL is quite consistent and reliable on 20 and 40M, often with very FB signals. Enjoy!

So much for the argument that dropping the CW requirement would lead to an influx of operators with poor skills/behaviors...guess the lids were here all along, eh? My assessment of similar problems on the phone bands is that the worst offenders are the old generals/advanced/extras. Don't know what it is about "he's working UP" that folks don't understand, though...
