QSL income for DXpeditions

Does QSLing for a major DXpedition, such as VP6DX, help defray expenses of the operation? Or, considering printing costs and labor, is it a net loss? I wonder simply because it seems few large operations immediately upload their logs to LOTW. If direct QSLs are a way to defray costs then I understand completely. If it is not, however, why is that not the first thing done so as to eliminate as many hard copy requests as possible? Can anyone who has been on the inside of such an operation shed some light on this? Thanks! Steve, NN4T

QSL reply work is generally done by volunteers. QSL cards for DXpeditions are often paid for by sponsors. Some QSL managers can make a small amount of money by purchasing their stamps for cash, and reselling IRCs at or slightly below face value. They can net some cash in this way, but not boatloads. They can also send mail destined for the USA in bulk via package, with USA postage applied, and have it mailed once over here by a colleague, further saving some monies. DXpeditions are generally sponsored by the manufacturers, DX Clubs and Ham radio Organizations, but significant monies are usually spent by the individual participants for the fun and enjoyment they derive from the activity. I'd still guess that most DXers want a paper QSL as a souvenier to look at, even if LOTW were 100%.

Thanks for the reply. Knowing that QSLs don't do much, if anything, to defray expenses of a DXpedition makes me again wonder why not just put them all on LOTW and let those who wish a paper QSL submit for it. Waiting months, or even longer, to post to LOTW seems inefficient if what you say is true. Steve NN4T

As mentioned above, most of us probably want a Paper QSL card for our collection. I personally would not care if they post to LOTW or not. To each his own, I guess. 73, Gene AF3Y

In order for a DX operation to obtain a LoTW certificate and upload logs, all of their necessary licensing and landing paperwork must first be submitted to ARRL's DXCC Desk for approval of the operation. Sometimes (as apparently in the case of VP6DX) this can be done in advance; however in other cases the approval is obtained sometime after the operation is over.
