Recently, I have received several envelopes from European DX, on which they had crossed out their return address, which I placed in the customary upper left hand corner on the face of the envelope, and they had re-written it on the reverse flap. There was no error in the address I wrote on the face, it was exactly as the DX wrote it on the reverse. I have also received envelopes from Europe (as well as S. America) with the return address on the reverse in addition to the one I had written on the face.
Is it customary for European envelopes to have the return address on the reverse of the envelope? I always put the DX's address to save him (or his Mgr) from having to do it. Anyone else have experience with this? I have done it this way for the past 3 years or so. Should I put the address on the reverse? Your thoughts??? 73, de Gene AF3Y

I don't put any return address on my reply envelopes.
Some come back with no return address. The ones that do have a return address are generally on the back.
Most of those are stamped. I don't know the postal regulations overseas, so I figured they could put it where it needs to be in their country.
I don't know if that answers your question. I've been keeping the reply envelopes with the cards, my wife thinks the stamps and cancel marks are kind of cool.
I pulled out a few to look, and it's a hodge podge. Some written, some stamped, but most are on the back.

Hi
It's usual to put the return address on the back of the envelope, here in the UK.

It once was standard in the States to place the return address on the back. Believe it changed to the front in the late 60's, early 70's.
Think it had something to do with the post office running optical character reader sorting machines. Although with hand written addresses I don't know what good that would do anyway (hi).

Seems to be a very U.S. thing, can't remember receiving them from anywhere else with return address on the front.
3 cards back today ... W, VU & BY. Only one had return address on the front.
