DXpedition Recommendation Needed Reply
by K4XG on May 9, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I need a recommendation of a Carribean location to take my 10 year old grandson (KJ4BIW). You may view KJ4BIW's profile on QRZ.com. He is a good DX'er and contester and I promised him a "light" DXpedition this summer.

I checked the K2AW listing of available DX rental locations but that information seems out of date largely. What I am looking for is:

-Ease of access
-Radio equipment supplied
-Room for 5 people
-A safe location
-Ease of licensing

I know many of you have operated from the Carribean and I would sincerely appreciate any recommendations you may have for a "ham friendly" rental location.

Thank you.

Check out www.VP5JM.com

There are others out there too, but room for 5 people may be the biggest hurdle to overcome at the "Rent-A-Shack" locations. But often there's a hotel nearby and, in the summertime, the rates are often quite nice.

Hi Tom,

Just saw your post so I am coming to this rather late, but here's my $.02 worth...

I have operated many "Do It Yourself Dxpeditions" around the world mainly by virture of the great amount of international business travel I do and my XYL's love of travel as well.

By far the easiest Caribbean location (and a good intro to DIYDxpeditions) is the Island of St. John in the USVI. Easy access from the US.

NO license to procure..you sign KP2/Home Call.

St John is very family freindly and not nearly as crowded as St. Thomas.

The beaches are beautiful and the snorkeling / diving / fishing is very good.

We Stay at Lavender Hill Suites. Ideal location up on a hill over Cruz Bay. With a 706 and a portable vertical antenna you'll work as much DX as you can handle.

I've done this trip three times and I always come back with a tan and lot's of DX in my log.

If you are interested in more info e-mail me and I'll give you the details on which unit I prefer at LH and some tips for your DIYD.

Also check out the KP2M facility. It's a shack rental arrangement too. You can Google it. I'm fond of operating from the U.S. Virgin Islands. No licensing issues, etc.

Especially for a first timer, I can recommend V31MD (www.wishwilly.net).

Great location, still answering QSLs years later, and great facilities.

A lot of these places are contest shacks that secondarily host DXpeditions. V31MD is the other way around. You really can pretty much walk into the shack and operate and not worry about messing up someone's SO2R or some such.

Also, his sister once ran a reasonably priced resort (with food I can recommend) literally a stone's throw away. You can rent either half of his house (next to the shack, recommended) or you can use the resort (especially good for a larger group and always good for a reasonable meal in walking distance). His sister sold the resort, but the new owners seemed to work out well when I last was there and is good for the non-hams in the group if it is large.

I went twice and wasn't disappointed in either 2005 or 2006.
