Who Needs Kingman Reef or Auckland/Campbell? Reply

I didn't start DX-ing until after the fantastic 2000 DX-ped to Kingman. In January 2009, it became a national marine monument. I have heard that it would be very difficult to get permission to go there again.

But its one of only two that I need in all of the "Pacific Rim". Auckland Campbell is the other, and both of these seem to be protected habitats.

My guess is that maybe both of these places could only be activated as part of a scientific study? I think both of these places are in a different status than say Navassa . . .

I wonder if either will be able to be activated again?

Yup, I'm in the same boat. I wasn't actively QRV on HF until 2001, and even then, only with a pipsqueak signal until 2004. In the Pacific, I also need those two, and also Wake Island.

My tower went up the week after Kure finished in 2005 and I only managed to snag them on 20 SSB with the temporary wire I had up at the time, so I could use them again on more bands/modes. Chesterfield as well--just one band/mode there so far.

I need Kingman.

I didn't pay much attention to DX during the school year in college so K5K came and went without me noticing.

I don't need Auckland/Campbell... I was home on Christmas break for ZL9CI... :-)

I need both of them. Logged my first DX in June of 2006, so I am relatively new at this, I guess you could say. Snagged the ZY0T this afternoon for #267 though. It's been three years of mostly crappy conditions for me too, but I am slowly putting QSOs in the log. 73, Gene

I also need them. I didn't start seriously DXing from my US location until 2006, and didn't get a tower and beam until late 2007. So any new ones are welcome!

I seem to recall that there was talk that the 2000 Kingman Reef DXpedition might be the last operation ever from there. Mostly due to its very frgaile eco-system.

I will ask the DXCC Desk to see what they think the status is . . .
