Wondering if anyone has tried to interface audio input and output through a usb port. I have a headset with boom mic for my pc and thought about diging into it and using it to interface with my rig.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

To send audio to the radio over the USB port you'd have to convert it to digital and then back to analog again at the radio. I don't know of any radios that are equipped to handle digital audio via a USB port.
There are USB sound cards that could be used to do the audio conversion. In fact there is a digital interface that contains one of these sound cards and uses a USB connection to the computer. It still requires the normal mike in, speaker out, and PTT connections to the radio however.

AH...Didn't think about the conversion. Did some more diging and found an interface to do such a thing by MixW, RigExpert. Kind of pricey as compared to my home brew.
Thanks for the input.

The RigExpert is more expensive than the typical sound card interface because the RigExpert contains the sound card. That allows you to do the whole thing via a single USB port. It gets the audio stuff out of the computer away from all the digital noise (pro audio stuff is going that direction these days). It frees your regular sound card and speakers for other Windows audio tasks. Given that the newer computers with audio on the mother board are begining to show problems with digital modes (Tx/Rx freqs different, etc), I expect that the RigExpert is the wave of the future in order to free us from inferior sound cards that were never designed to do digital modes.

I have the RigExpert and I think it is worth the money, I use it with MixW software. It is more than just a sound chip on a USB. There is a Motorola microprocessor and A/D + D/A inside. When I travel I take it and plug it into my laptop. The sound card on my laptop is useless for digital modes. Depending on the radio you can make a cable to go to the modern 6 pin mini DIN socket, so there is only one connection to the radio A second connection to the radio is required for CAT.
The built in microprocessor takes a load off your computer.
