Hi,
I currently use a Garmin Legend for the GPS and bought an interface from a fellow ham...
Legend is the cheapest Garmin model that you can download maps into....
Interface to the radio is seamless, simply plug it in....it is also cheaper than buying the pig tail from Garmin (they want 28.00)...other can be had for around 20.00, complete....
let me know if you want his email address....
and welcome aboard....
Pete

Look at Garmin's in the camping and fishing stores, you'll find them starting around $125 with data capabiltiies. The cheapest ones (i.e. one of the etrex models, I think) do not have a serial connection--so they can't be used for APRS.
You can also buy the GPS-18 from Garmin, www.gpscity.com is one merchant I think, for about $80 and that's a "hockey puck" you can wire up directly. Good for permanent vehicle use, since you need an outdoor antenna with a good full sky view for good reception, and the whole puck can mount externally.
The drawback is that you can't plot waypoints on it, since it has no screen or controls. Expect to pay $125-150 for a complete handheld Garmin, more if you want maps and other features which may well be worth the cost.
