Hi Martin,
I started with the original Rascal from http://www.packetradio.com/
I now use the SignaLink+ from Tigertronics
http://www.tigertronics.com/
it is fully assembled and needs no com port
so it is great with newer laptops.
It uses VOX to key the radio.
We used the signalink at field day for the last two years without any problems.
Most of these interfaces work fine once you adjust the level controls for the soundcard on the pc.

You really didnt say much about what digital modes you want to operate?
PSK is fine, but RTTY and RTTY contesting really is fun. And besides you work a lot of dx.
I am using the Rascal from http://www.packetradio.com/
And would suggest that over the other guy Tiger interface for one and only one reason. The Rascal will do real 'FSK' and the Tiger will only do 'AFSK'. Now you may or may not know what I am taking about but your IC-706 does 'FSK' and if you have a optional CW filter, I use the 350HZ, it will pass the RTTY tones through it. On AFSK you have to use the SSB filter which is not very selective on RTTY.
I am using a Rascal on my TS-850S, IC-706MK2G and IC-756PROIII. What ever you buy, as you only want to buy once, make sure the interface supports FSK for rtty and not AFSK only like the Tiger.
You will thank me when you get tried of PSK.

I use two different interfaces, depending on what mode I am running. As noted above the Mk-IIG (and actually all 706S) do FSK and that has an advantage for RTTY, AMTOR and PACTOR.
I use a home brew interface (cost was $25 because I used molded plug cables) with a 4N25 opto-isolator for sound card modes and an olde PK-900 for RTTY et al.
One previous post mentioned using SSB for digital and I think that is the worst way. The 706 has an RTTY within the mode selection that will give you filters that are quite good.
