Any Digital Elmers out there? Reply
by KC8YTP on March 11, 2006 Mail this to a friend!
I've only been Ham for 2 years and was really gung-ho when I started. Picked up a RS HTX-242 and was working on
getting around my learning block with CW. Then I stumbled on BUXCOMM. I bought a Rascal from that Rascal , and it never did work. I'd try to get it to work , re read the instructions, try it with different software for about 3
months. Got fed up and put it in a box in the closet.

Well I'm all fired up again, I just bought a Signalink SL1+ and have been trying to get it to work. I've been thru the set up 5 or 6 times now. The SL1 responds as the instructions indicate it should when making the sound card adjustments and the "Tune" procedure in the program.
I've tried it with DigiPan, and WinPSK and a couple other programs. All I get is garbled text like : ecae!eAo-ymeoUobB ne o % St meeli \ Vweeon

Can someone set me straight on a couple of questions I have? Is digital/packet/PSK possible on 2 meters? Maybe I'm confused and trying to do something in the wrong realm and need to wait till I can work in 10 meters.
Thanks
KC8YTP - Gary

I think you need different software. If I remember correctly neither Digipan or WinPSK support packet. These two are PSK only if I'm correct.

Thanks for the Reply N8UZE

OK, If I understand you correctly, I cannot do PSK on 2 meters, only Packet. I was confused by the Band setting in Digipan for 2 Meters. I guess I'm completely lost on what I'm doing. I wonder if there are Packet programs for Windows 98? I'll do some searching. I hope that they are not DOS only. Do you have any recommendations ?
Thanks

Packet is used on 2 meters. PSK-31 is used on HF and you don't need Signalink or any other contraption. The signal is encoded and decoded by your computer with the soundcard used for audio in and outputs. All you need are cables and a ground connection between the radio and the computer. Most programs like Digipan and Hamscope are free to download. AB7JK

It is physically possible to do PSK on VHF but as a general sort of thing they don't. Software is usually designed to give lots of choices just for user convenience. If you could find someone in your area that wanted to do PSK with you on 2m, you could do it.

However, in general, PSK is used on HF while packet is used on VHF.

There's lots of software out there for very modest cost or even free.

If you have a TNC (terminal node controller), my favorite software is WINPACK. It is free and runs on Windows. If you are going with the sound card interface, MixW (by the same authors as Digipan) covers packet and many other modes. It's not free but the cost is low and for all that it does is quite reasonable. It also runs on Windows.

Many Thanks for your answers N8UZE.
I'll do some more reading / studying up and take a look
at MixW since my SL1+ is a sound card interface rather than a TNC.

Hi, I've been using a SignaLink +1 for the last year and found it very successful. I also use TrueTTY for RTTY along with MMSSTV for my SSTV operations. MixW works well too, and also does packet on HF.

I've found that the SL works best on HF, made a new lead for the mic socket of my TS 430s and it works great. I also did packet with it on 40 metres using Winpack and the AGW Packet Engine, which also worked very well. The SL uses a VOX tone PTT system, which I don't think will work with most 2 metre radios.

I have done 2 metre packet but for that I used my trusty old MFJ 1270B TNC and again Winpack both with and without AGW. I've also used PaKet, which is a DOS based prog, but will run in a Command Prompt window (DOS Window under W95 and W98) and is about the only prog that will run a TNC from the Window. I use XP Pro.

Since the Aussie govt dropped the CW requirement and let me onto HF, I haven't bothered much with V/UHF :-)

Hope you get things going OK.

Cheers from Kate vk4xyl

Hope you got digital modes to work by now and I know
it can be frustrating when things do not fall in place readily.

I been running packet for several years and sometimes changing over programs may get a glitch here and there. But primarily with some assistance it can be worked out in the end.

I am currently running the Winpack program for VHF on Windows for VHF, on HF mainly use my Donner interface and run hamscope, digipan, dm-780. Also worked some hellschreiber too and that comes through great.

There is a Indiana ARES net on Tuesday evenings 8 PM local time on 3583 usb running various digital modes.
Lately it has been Olivia and mfsk too.

If you would like to take a crack at it let me know and my email is ka9qwc@arrl.net - last night stations checked in from Rhode Island all the way down south. I was running a whopping 20 watts.

Good Luck,

Don /ka9qwc

The Signalink WILL work with most any mode that uses your computer sound card, including Packet. All you need is the right software to run on the PC.

If you can receive 20M, try tuning to 14.070 (radio in USB) and put DigiPan in the BPSK mode. You should be able to receive PSK31 signals. That'll show that your setup is working.

For 2M Packet (which is really an FM mode) you'll have to get some software that does Packet with the sound card.

You can run ANY mode your software supports on 2 meters!
Will you find someone to work...?? prob not.
There IS alot of PSK on 2 meters, buts its on SSB.
Take a look at www.w1hkj.com for FLDigi..has lot of
modes and is free also MultiPSK is good(ugly but good)
It is Shareware... and does not have a time limit like
MixW. It does ALL the modes.
We have ran PSK and Olivia on 2 meters FM thru
the local repeater..just need to find someone who wants to play.
If you run PSK on FM just go faster..like PSK250..altho you can run PSK31..FM will support 250 with no problem.
Have fun!
