MMTTY on XP Reply
by N0IU on November 7, 2006 Mail this to a friend!
I finally moved into the 21st Century kicking and screaming. I upgraded from Windows98 to XP Pro. Everything works fine except for MMTTY (v.1.65). I was using this in FSK mode with the EXTFSK program keying the rig (756Pro) through the LPT1 port and controlling the rig through COM1.

When I start the program, I get a warning box that says 'Cannot open COM1 for Radio Control'. The main problem is that the rig will no longer key up.

I know the rig control works because Ham Radio Deluxe works (and NO, it is not running when I start MMTTY). I know COM2 works because CWType works. I changed it to COM1 and it also works there.

The problem seems to be that MMTTY is not talking to the LPT1 or COM ports.

HELP!

Hi Scott,

Hopefully one of these following suggestions will help resolve your problem.

1.) First you need to consider that although your PC has four Comports, only two can be active at the same time.

Comports 1 and 3 share IRQ 4 and Comports 2 and 4 share IRQ 3. The PC will malfunction if two Comports use the same IRQ simultaneously.

If you have an internal telephone modem, it is not uncommon to have one of the regular serial ports disabled or "tied up" by the device even though it may not be fully operational etc...

Internal telephone modems or other similarly installed communication devices will usually take up comport 2 by default.

2.) Another thing to keep in mind is that some laptops configure ("enable/disable - IRQ settings etc.") comports for the PC through the BIOS/CMOS settings and not necessarily through the windows operating system.

3.) You can check which devices are already using IRQ 3 or (Com 2 or 4) by your PC.

If you are using Windows XP go to:

Start --> Control Panel ---> System --> "hardware tab" ---> Device Manager.

Look on the list and click on "Ports (COM & LPT)"

This will reveal your current devices and Com ports in use.

4.) It may be necessary to "install" a comport if none are already installed or exist. This is especially true when using "Windoze XP" for some apparent reason.

To install a new comport go to

Start --> Control Panel ---> Add New Hardware

The "Add new Hardware Wizard" will start.

When it asks if the device is already connected, choose "yes" (even if it isn't connected)

A list of devices will appear. At the bottom of the list there will be a selection called

"Add a New Hardware Device"

Choose that option and the wizard will appear.

You need to choose:

"Install the hardware I choose manually from a list (Advanced)"

The hardware wizard will display is a list.

Choose (Ports COM & LPT)

Select from the "Standard Port Types" and choose "Communication Port" and click the "Next" button. You will be asked to click "next" again to verify installation of the new comport on your PC.

Once that is done, reboot the PC and run the software and I bet the new comport you installed will now "magically" appear and you may no longer get the "Comport not available message" when starting the software.

Charles,

I appreciate the detailed response, but the problem was not that the COM ports and LPT port were not working at all, they were not working within the confines of the MMTTY program, a subtle yet important distinction!

The issue was with the EXTFSK program and the dlportio.dll and .sys files. Everything is now working properly and I can get back on RTTY!
