Hi,I'm using Acer One w/XP and West Mtn. Radio Plug & Play interface with Digipan 2.0 into ICOM-718. Works just fine, also used with ICOM-706 MkIIG. No problems at all. I like the Acer One as it has more RAM and hard drive than my desktop. Keyboard is smaller, but the whole thing is versatile. I have 3 Powerpoints loaded for Tech., Gen., and Extra as well as Music. I am well pleased with the Acer One. 73, Ed

Re netbooks in general (forgive the somewhat off-topic...) I am using an ASUS 901/XP Home/SignaLink combo for PSK, and the ASUS 901 with the PMSDR of IW3AUT (http://www.rfsystem.it/shop/) and WinRad 1.32. It is a wonderful, compact addition to the shack. Highly recommend the genre...[WinRad requires it to be used in 1024x768 display mode]. People with fat fingers (like me) can plug in a USB keyboard with full-size keys.

I have the Linux version, and, as it ships, it will run fldigi, though a few hacks are needed to be able to install and run it (or, for that matter any additional software) on the "Linpus" distro it comes with. Also, you have to use the built-in audio. A USB audio interface will not work as the distro contains no support for USB audio and no way (that I could find) to add it.

HOWEVER... I upgraded mine to Ubuntu, and I easily use fldigi and my SignaLink USB - works quite nicely.

The AAO, FT817, and wire antenna or MP1 will all fit in a single briefcase for a very portable digital station!

I run all the digital modes from the mobile including APRS (UI-View32) digi/igate with my acer aspire and PK232MBX. Have fun.

I used an Acer Aspire 1 running Windows XP, a SignaLink USB interface and a Yaesu FT-817ND to operate PSK31 in Israel this spring. Software was Digipan. It worked very well for me, with no setup hassles.

Rig, interface, AC power supply and laptop fit easily in a small backpack for carry-on. A Par End-Fedz 10-20-40 meter antenna was in my checked suitcase, along with phones, 50 feet of very light coax, etc. With miserable propagation conditions and the Par antenna horizontal and only 15 to 18 feet above ground level, I was able to work all over eastern Europe and the Balkans, and into northern European Russia.

Portable? Take a look at the NUE-PSK digital modem. No computer needed.

The Acer Aspire is a great little computer.

I wouldn't cripple it with Linux, the XP version works fine. Linux is for computer hobbyists and anti-capitalist wackos who will take a hit on performance and quality as long as they can imagine that nobody profits from it.

Try Linux, any flavor of Linux on one of your present machines before you buy something that has you stuck with no alternative. - You'll find that Linux is slower, regularly messes up, is harder to get running, and once you do get it running, the software for it really bites.

If you are a gamer, you might be familiar with Unreal Tournament ( GOTY Edition ) which runs fine on this little XP netbook. - The point being that Unreal Tournament is much more demanding than any ham radio program you are likely to run across.

Speaking of which, I found that Ham Radio Deluxe runs FB on the Aspire One, with a USB rig-control cable I bought on eBay for 25 bux.

For digital use, the Tigertronics Signal-Link interface with the built-in soundcard is very hard to beat, well worth the investment.

BTW, MagicJack works great on the Aspire One as well, a great setup for when you travel.

I must be the exception.

I've tried two different 11.6" Aspire One netbooks and I can't get the Signalink USB to put out a clean signal. It works great on my MacBook running Windows and a 9.8" Acer netbook, but no joy on the 11.6" version.

I'm pretty sure the Signalink USB unit is good. I was working PSK31 from my MacBook all weekend (after I realized the netbook wasn't helping things).
It seems like some sort of software problem because if I run some task in the background while I'm transmitting, the tone is clean. But if Digipan is the only program running, the output is very noisy.
Interestingly, receive works fine on the Netbook. It's just the transmission.

I like the little net books for portable operation, but if I can't get it to cooperate, it won't do me much good.

Any ideas????
