APRS add-on for radios w/o APRS - survey Reply
by SQNEWTON on May 6, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Hello all,

I am working on a prototype of an APRS add-on for radios that don't have APRS capability. This add-on differs from existing APRS (such as TinyTrak, Mic-E, Pic-E, etc.) in following ways:

- embedded good quality GPS
- automatic switch to APRS frequency to send packet and then automatic switch back to original frequency (Kenwood, others)
- user programmable, non-volatile parameters (location, call ID, etc.) via USB port and any serial terminal program
- compact size
- add-on connects between the microphone and the radio
- other desirable features ??

I would appreciate any feedback from you about these features and other desirable features. I posted a one-minute survey at

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=j4DWa8RecYj8LA1p_2f82byQ_3d_3d

It will help me get a better idea of your real requirements and validate a concept. You can also send me an email to sqnewton at hotmail dot com if you prefer so. Thanks in advance for your feedback!! Santiago

You might also consider a user setting that prevents the radio from switching to the APRS frequency and sending the packet unless the radio has been inactive for 15 seconds. By "inactive" I mean the PTT has not been activated and the squelch has not been opened. That would ensure that the APRS would not take over the radio while the user was involved in a voice communications.

I want to clarify that the GPS is a receiver module only, without display

Thanks for the comment. That is how it is intended to work. It will have some intelligence that if it doesn't detect PTT in a while AND the pre programmed time has elapsed (to transmit the packet) then it will do the TX. Other features, too. Thx!

Some groups on the East coast are beginning to understand some of the more far-reaching APRS features, that is, beyond basic position reporting. You might give some consideration toward helping the add-on radio do voice-over calling on the APRS channel using data provided via APRS messages. With your "intelligent" device between the microphone and the radio, you might be able to make this operation work relatively seemlessly for users. Other things might be keeping track of voice channels listed in packets so that users can look at the list of APRS stations and the system knows where to go to reach them.

Also, having an easy-to-use software interface in the PC for other programs to introduce both control commands and data packets might be useful to those with programming skills. There are a whole bunch of possibilities here; however, I would look seriously at using an industry standard protocol.

Hope this helps,
Charlie, WA3KVN
