so i just got my gen ticket, i am interested in digital would consider setting up a station with computer, interface, maybe 2m transceiver so what combo of gear would give me the least hassle, since i am starting out without equipment i can design the system to what i want, don't have anything to retrofit. would you suggest a multi-band rig, dedicated 2m rig, what interface.

I like my TS2000 and Signalink USB, and MIXW setup for my base station. Since I use a laptop for the computer, I can take it to the mobile and use the Signalink with my FT-100D also.

Definitely consider a multi-band/multi-mode transceiver. You will enjoy 6M and 2M SSB along with operation on the HF bands.

The choice of rig almost comes down to personal preferences. I would suggest taking the time to operate with as many rigs as possible on the upcoming Field Day.

Whatever transceiver you get look for CAT control and a DATA port.

You can't beat Tigertronics SignaLink USB for an interface, IMO.

I would probably go with a Yaesu FT-857D, a small antenna tuner, Buxcomm interface...and a 20 amp power switching supply.

The FT-857D (all band, all mode) goes for $400-$600 used depending on filters and other add-ons added. Make sure you buy from a ham as some of these show up (EBAY)with a clipped mic cable and [power cables...i.e. "HOT"...

A good used tuner rated around 200 watts goes for about $100...$60 used

Buxxcomm interface goes for about $40 new with software. $25 used

Switching Power supply 20 amp....<$100

If the data modes are your main interest check out the cable adds on the Ham Radio Deluxe page. They are the best and cheapest in the business. Besure to get the right RS-232 cable.

Ham Radio Deluxe is the simplest to use for rig control and data modes and also has great logging program...Check it out....

73 and welcome to the hobby....

Spot on. I love my IC-7000 running with HRD. Dumping my RigBlaster Plug & Pray for the SignaLink was a great move.
