Digital Modes, WIN7 & Flex Radios Reply
by W1ZI on October 29, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Like many, I have been eagerly (?) waiting for the "real" version of WIN7. Now that it is here and installed, I have a killer problem. Bear with me while I describe it...I am using a Flex 3000 with a Dell XPS 420. The pieces that go with the F3K are VAC and com0com, together with one or another of the following digital programs, DigiPan, MixW 2.19, fldigi, multipsk, etc. The problem shows up in either WIN7 or in XP running on a VM inside WIN7, and consists of random, intense horizontal strips across the waterfall, spaced by 3 or 4 seconds or less, and of a fractional second duration. Otherwise, the lash-up seems to work just fine, but the stripes are disconcerting, to say the least.

These stripes look very much like static crashes, BUT they occur WITH or WITHOUT the digital program connected to anything, i.e. no receiver, no VAC, no com0com. They are present in the "apparent" audio input of the digital program.

I have VISTA installed in an alternative boot on the same computer, and when things are run inside VISTA these stripes DO NOT occur at all. I would like to "move on" to WIN7, but cannot. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the cause and cure of this problem?

Many thanks -- W1ZI, John

Since you're running a virtual machine, everything gets complicated. Here's a wild guess:

One thing that _could_ cause "static crashes" would be a problem with program priority.

The program that reads the soundcard "mic" input (e.g. Digipan) _should_ be running at high priority -- high enough so that the soundcard buffers never fill up.

It may be running at a high priority _within the VM_, but it's possible that the VM itself is _not_ running at a high priority within Windows 7.

I don't know how you would fix that, but it might be a parameter when you start the VM. God knows what the side-effects of raising the priority of the _whole VM_ would be, but it's worth a try.

Since I'm considering migrating from Vista (which I hate) to Windows 7, _please_ let us know how this problem resolves.

Thanks --

Charles

This is an update to my earlier post "Digital Modes, WIN7 & Flex Radios."

My WIN7 Ultimate was generated using the upgrade facility for VISTA Ultimate provided on the WIN7 Upgrade disk. After a lot of bumbling around, I discovered that the upgrade routines do not completely transfer programs in a few cases. For example, all of my Paretologic Software transferred without problems except for the "RegClean" part. I have a few other instances of this, and in particular, the upgrade routines did not completely transfer the VAC programs, so I was left with what looked to WIN7 as if it were the TRIAL version of VAC, even though in VISTA I had the paid version. The trial version of VAC is (in)famous for interspersing "upgrade request messages" in its operation, and these were appearing as "static bursts" on my waterfalls.

The fix was easy; just re-install VAC from scratch from the distribution diskette. I can now report, after about 24 hours of testing, that WIN7, the pSDR driver for Flex Radios, and the digital programs are completely compatible. This is, I guess, why my hair is grey.

Have fun, guys and gals...W1ZI (76 years old and counting).
